Very sluggish all the time

Am trying to get to bottom of a problem that's been getting progressively worse with my mk1 galaxy tdi. To start with it was just sluggish up hills but now is all the time. Even getting speed to pull out of junction can be dodgy. Am thinking of replacing the MAF and wonder does anyone know whether a faulty one would cause permanent sluggishness. Thanks

Scanning for fault codes would confirm if you had a boost issue, if there are none then most likely a MAF problem.
Does the problem go away temporarily if you stop and restart engine.

With VCDS lite (full version) need a code clearing or want to scan for faults in the north kent area, PM me. All for a pint of Strongbow.

Have scanned with vagcom and it shows nothing. Is not intermittent now and does not improve turning off and on. Out of gear the engine can rev high but once driving feels like there is no power. It is difficult to even get above 30mph on the flat. Would a faulty turbo cause this? Could it be fuel supply? Any ideas other than the MAF? I could replace this at a cost of Ã,£100+ and still be no better off. Thanks for any help

Unfortunately bad Maf's rarely give a fault code.
Check the localised wiring to the MAF as breakages here have been known.
You could try driving with it disconnected to see if there's an improvement.
Also do some live data with VCDS use measuring blocks 003. 010. 011. see link below.

Thanks for the advice chris, will try what you suggest.

Unplugged the MAF and got a good improvement. Was able to get to 3000 revs in each gear! So I guess that's a big guilty sign for the MAF. Btw I have to make a 300 mile round trip tomorrow - will driving with the MAF disconnected do any harm? (Obviously will get MAF replaced ASAP after)

You may find you will use more fuel.

Consider yourself very lucky, from experience and other members comments cheap Maf's tend to give more problems than the original bad maf.

i had a huge discount from the retailer  i buy from as i have used them for  15 yrs or more it should have been Ã,£96+ bu8t i have my own mechanic who is also a family friend and he has his own garage and does m.o.ts

Thats a more realistic price for a quality part.
