Auto problem or driveshaft?

Hi guys, serious problem I fear.
I was driving home earlier and heard a bang, and lost drive from the car, put the car into neutral(autobox) and then back into drive, and managed to limp the car home although it only had drive in 1st and 2nd (3rd and up just slipped - no drive ). When home switched the engine off and checked for fault codes on the autobox of which there was nothing, but now when I change into reverse or drive there's nothing at all, so I'm hoping beyond hope its a half shaft stopping the drive. What do you guys think. Thanks. Andy.

Is there any grinding noises? Normally, when the half-shaft completely fails there is a grinding noise for a couple of miles afterwards as the remaining metal is worn away. On the plus side, the more torque you put through the shaft (ie the higher the gear) then the higher that it wouldn't be able to turn it so sounds like it could indeed be the problem. If you get under the car it should be fairly apparent if it is or isn't the shaft at this stage! :)

There was some grinding noises for a couple of miles which disappeared, so am hoping it's the half shaft. Will be getting under the car tomorrow for closer inspection, otherwise it's a recon gearbox and I don't think it's going to be worth it. :-(

Look for rusty filings that's usually a sign the splines have gone.

Well the shafts look fine, so I think the gearbox has gone kaput, after a bit of research I think the torque converter may have a problem with it, so am thinking car needs to go to the scrappers. :-(

Just as an experiment with the handbrake off and in park can you push or roll the car.
