Hi all
Were the factory fit satnav units any good?
Are they just a staight swap into a 2001 mk2
Whats was the model number?
Thanks in advance for your usual excellent help

For what it's worth, I believe the actual unit is a straight swap but you'll need the dedicated aerial on the roof and all the dashboard gubbings (Different display when you have satnav) so probably best with a Garmin or a smart phone?

Pah, dashboard units are ALWAYS better then external units or phones ;)

Its actually quite easy to retrofit the nav, you need to swap the inner dash panel (the bit the radio sits in) for the slightly taller version (Ford radios are 1.75 DIN where the nav unit is a true 2.0 Double DIN) so it fits. Wiring wise, buy a FORD to ISO converter which takes care of the speakers and power. You'll then just have to move the VSS (Speed Signal) wire yourself. The GPS aerial can sit on the unit itself or be taken up to sit on or under the dash - that's it done!

Optionally, you need to connect a handbrake and reverse signal to it. The instrument cluster is different for NAV based car's because you can have the instructions relayed up to it (another two wires and a spot of coding) but it will work perfectly well without swapping clusters if you prefer. Again, the roof aerial dramatically improves performance when it built up areas but having it down on the dash is no different to having a tomtom there.

When I had mine I liked it a lot, you can get custom interfaces to allow it to show video and play MP3's. The only reason I changed mine out was for better interconnectivity with my phone.

Finally, the model you are looking for is an "MFD1". Its a VW unit (made by Blaupunkt) re-branded for Ford and SEAT. Only the Ford version has the green illumination though. Finally there are revisions (A, B and G last time I looked) - G is the preferable version as its a lot quicker.
