difficult gear selection

Hi,

I'm having problems with the gears on my S-Max. Initially it started off as occasionally having trouble changing down into first, it just wouldn't engage, then yesterday I couldn't select reverse either. Yesterday, I could change to all the lower placed gears - 2nd, 4th & 6th.

Today it's any gear apart from the first gear I select. I have no problem selecting the gear initially, but when I come to change gear, it's as if there's something stopping it engaging, and it returns to neutral.

Stopping the engine, and restarting enables me to select the gear once again, but I am unable to select any others.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

sorry to hear of your woes,im afraid i cant answer your question,
as it could be a manner of all things bad and expensive or just something simple like the cable/s lose or kinked etc.

Hello and 

Without the engine running do the gears appear engage OK.

Trying to determine whether you have a clutch fault or cable linkage issue, does the lever feel slack (more than usual).

Lever is now very slack and floppy

Check out the cable joints on the top of gearbox

Just to let you know it ended up being the gear change cable, luckily I managed to get the part at cost, and it was fitted by a friend's garage, so luckily cost a fraction of what it could have done!
