The steering wheel shakes when the brak is pressed

The steering wheel of My 2003 1.9tdi Galaxy shakes for few seconds when I press the brakes whether the car at high peed or slow motion. What is the cause? Are the discs or the brakes pads or both or something else. How easy to do?

Discs is the most likely cause but don't rule out a worn suspension part or a wonky wheel/tyre.

There so many type on ebay which one is the most appropriate one if I decide to replace them ?. Alternatively, I am thinking of grinding them with an angle grinder while they are still fitted !!!!! But I do not know how practical that is.

Don't even think about attacking them with an angle grinder, on a lathe yes but for the price of new discs not worth the hassle,
there are two sizes so you will need to measure the diameter and thickness.

unless u want cracked disk that could jam up in the calliper and lock at high speed  not a good idea I've got to do mine as well there scored but good old wilcos Ã,£28.00 a pop not bad excluding pads.

is there any instructions on this forum on how to replace them?
based on the search on the interne,  The ones I have on my car are 288mm in diameter and 25mm in thickness based on the wheel size (15 inches). The 300mm in diameter and 26 mm in thickness is for 16 inches wheel size.

Also I would like to mention that I took on of the wheels off today and felt the discs. To my surprise they are very smooth and not rusty. This made me think , the steering wheel vibration when braking is because of them or something else.!!.

Grinder? Are you mad!

The discs will still be smooth and rust free as the pad's won't be skipping on the surface, more the calliper will be pulled and pushed with the warp (and subsequently pull and push the steering)

Also, Just to clarify, there is also a 313mm disc fitted to the 150 diesel and V6 models.

Grinding out of the question, thanks for the advice. However, still confuse by Mirez last reply. Mirez .....are you recommending replacing the pads or the discs?

He's saying the discs are warped so they will need replacing.  When you replace the discs you should also replace your pads any way as the old ones will be worn to match the wear on the discs.

Hi, Just had the rear discs and pads replaced on my Galaxy V6 Ghia. Had the same problems with brake shudder; now fixed and feel so much safer.

wonky wheel/tyre was the cause of this problem. I fitted the back wheels to the frot ones and vice versa back in September and the problem disappeared since. However,  the ââ,¬Å"check brake padsââ,¬Â warring light start coming on in the last couple of days.

ââ,¬Â¢   Do I need to change the front pads or rear pads or both?
ââ,¬Â¢   How easy to replace? Anything specific I need to look for?
ââ,¬Â¢   Do recommend a brand and where to order it from?

Fronts most likely as tgey do most of tge work but could be either
Easy enuff job if you are competent with spanners
If memeory serves me correctly you will need a 7mm allen key not usually found in sets but easily available,a piston windback tool will make lufe a lot easier too(pretty much essential for rears)
Rember to clamp the flexy hose so fluid dont get pushed back into abs block
Might be an idea to grab a haynes manual and have a read up first
