have carried out a simple fix to get the thing to open again,
it appears there are plastic lugs that hold the springs in,these break and stop the lid from opening.
what i done was,
removed the box 3 torx screws,drilled some holes,inserted some panel pins under both springs and bent pins round and refitted works ok,jobs a gooden.
vw t5 camper van.

Sorry to reply to an old post but I find my cubby not springing open is advantageous in so much as it will hold my phone or sat nav in position by resting on them instead of springing up.

If you just push the button and stick your finger nail in the side it will open ok, or stick a little black material to the side as a pull up device.
