Fuses for radiator fans

Can anyone tell me the fuse numbers and/or relays and where they are for the radiator fans please. I have an error 18080 coolant fan control 1. Have checked aircon fan and this also doesn't come on. Thanks. Andy

The fans don't have a relay as such, instead they have a controller which sits just in front, and below the engine bay fusebox which could be faulty. It's fed by F104 and F105 which are two big 40A fuses located in that same fusebox. It's grounded at the back of the engine bay (on the suspension tower). There are some additional control circuits on Fuses, F18 and F34 of the cabin fusebox although it appears these wouldn't kill the circuit.

Thanks mirez ill have an investigate and see what I can find.

Can anyone tell me which fan of the two is coolant fan 1, thanks

IIRC Fan 1 is the higher of the two, which I think is the drivers side one.

Ok have changed the fan controller for a known working one and still nothing. I've run leads to both fans direct from the battery, and both spin up so I know the motors are good in the fans. So I rechecked the fault codes after clearing with vagcom and I still get error 18080 coolant fan control 1. Intermittent or short to ground.
So I tried to look for the earth point that mirez mentioned earlier in the post, but can't seem to find where it is?  Aircon fan is not coming on with climate on auto, but not sure if that's because my climate panel is flashing, or it's flashing because of the fan. Any pointers guys?  Thanks. Andy

Did you check the fuses mirez said about and is the control module the same exact part number as there are lots of versions!!
Toot-Toot! Beep-Beep!

Yes fuses have been checked all ok, and the controller has exactly the same serial number as the one I took off.

2000 is right on the cross-over so you may also have to look in the cabin fuse box for fuses F72 and F73 - again both 40A.

If you can't find the ground then just meter the resistance from the chassis to the control module and/or the fan. Solid Brown is always ground on VAG car's so pick that at the motor and check the resistance to the chassis.

Ok not to good with a multimeter so what poor mirez says has gone right over my head (sorry). So I reverted to the good old Haynes manual which says to check the radiator switch and to bridge the contacts on the plug which I have done (3 pin) and between alternating the wires I have low speed and high speed on both fans. So my next question is, do you think it's the switch as the Haynes suggest or still a bad earth as the vagcom vaguely pointed towards, which is stopping the switch operating. Very sorry for the constant questions. Thanks in advance. Andy

Sorry, also would anyone have the correct part no for the switch or will it be a case of removing it and using the number from the old one. Ta. Andy

Right the radiator fan control unit under the battery fuse box can you confirm the solid brown wire has actually got a good earth?

If your not sure using a multimeter bare a small section of the insulation from the brown cable, twist a length of similar size cable around the bared cable and connect to the battery negative, now check see if there's any change, clear code etc.

Also double check fuses 16. 18. 20. 21. 22.
Come back when you done this.

Thank you Chris, it was fuse f16 or complete lack there of. Installed a fuse, cleared code and voila no re-error and fans come on with the auto button on climate. Thanks so much.

And thanks to mirez also, have credited you both.
