I have a ford galaxy 08 2.0tdci
I was just wandering if anyone knew what this strange pump noise is when I turn the car off, it seems to be coming from the back  end of the engine area

How long does the noise carry on for? has it always done it, only happen when hot.

hi there the noise only lasts about 10 seconds, and the noise happens weather its hot or cold

I have a 61 reg and am aware of what sounds like something resetting, again about 5 to 10 seconds, don't always hear it but usually when it's had a run on the motorway am told this is to do with the diesel particulate filter regeneration.
This may be what your hearing.

i'm not sure its a resetting noise it sounds more like something winding down and then stops, but like I say it happens whether it had a run or not.
I can go out in a morning start the car and leave it running for a minute and turn it off and this noise starts

It's not something simple like the A/C fan powering down is it?

I thought that but I've even turned the A/C off to check, but I've just been outside playing about with this and that and gave the engine a good high rev a few times to see if it could do with a good clear out and its stopped doing it now

its to do with Pierburg solenoids and if you have the same engine as the smax there could well be 2,1 is on the egr valve and the other is on the boost/vanes on the turbo,i too get this noise.

I have a 2009 TDCi. When I switch off, it's quiet for a few minutes then the car figures out I really am home and not going anywhere else. Then there's a sound not unlike a small electric motor that lasts about 3 or 4 seconds then stops. I think it's just closing off vents in the aircon.

My previous galaxy was a Mk2 and also a diesel. That had a sound much like an exhauist from a balanced-flue gas fire that ran for a few minutes after I stopped the car - something to do with needing to keep something running while the engine cooled. Not really sure why.

Both are entirely normal.
