Is there any issue with just changing Oil Filter not Oil

I attempted an oil and filter change for the first time on my new Galaxy TDI.

I got the undertray off eventually (found it quite a job getting at the bolts), just about got the sump plug off as it was tightened by a gorilla, but then when i came to unscrew the top of the oil filter housing i found that said gorilla had really gone to town with it and it was stuck fast.
I tried my metal screwing noose type oil filter remover but it still wouldn't budge.

I tried for ages and eventually decided i would have to just replace the oil and leave the filter.

I will need to buy some heavy duty grips i think as it is stuck fast.

Question is will there be an issue with replacing just the oil filter on its own?

Will i have to take the undertray off and jack it up again to drain and reuse the oil to change it, or will it be ok just removing the filter?

Thanks for any help.

I will be using it next weekend for my own car....

sorry pressed wrong button !!!
if you have only done a few miles (not hundreds) then just do the filter.

bear in mind that vw used to have oil-ONLY changes many moons ago ! but I believe that pampering a pd motor will keep it happy ???  mine gets 2 oil/filter changes per year, and does between 7 or 8k a year !!!   but its up to 160k as we speak.

I do both oil and filter every 6K.

I normally use a ratchet strap wrapped around a breaker bar to take it off as they seem to have a habit of self tightening!! To answer your question though, no you'll be fine to change it on it's own and without needing to do anything else. Just unscrew it, replace and re-tighten (Lightly lol)

Ah thats good, was a little worried i would have to go through the whole process again. I am yet to get that satisfying feeling of completing a job! I definetly need to get something heavy duty on it, and as i am learning quickly having only done servicing on a Megane.....there is very little room in the engine bay of a Galaxy :(

Thanks for the replies.

:) You get used to it and to be fair, nearly all modern engine bay's are crammed with stuff!

It's hard to explain how I do it but it works every time. Get a strap and loop it around the top of the filter housing so you have the two "tails" coming away together - Then roll the extension bar from a socket set up the tails so it wraps around a number of times and ends up against the housing. You should now be able to turn the bar with a wrench and it'll rotate the strap and free the housing top.
