Hi all,

trying to work out if i have a gearbox / driveshaft problem or not.

I have read lots of threads on the 6 speed VW gearbox, and i know its not a great box.

But, heres what im getting.

Driving from cold, going from 2nd to 3rd gear, its very notchy, ok after a few miles tho. (think i may need a oil chnage on box)

The other problem i have noticed is, when changing down the box. when im doing about 20 mph in 3rd slowing down, and change to 2nd, i get a sort of thud noise as i engage 2nd, and the same in when dropping into 1st. It goes into gear fine tho. Doesnt crunch or grind, just sounds like something loose and when engaging it takes the slack up.

Would this be a suspect driveshaft with ware?

I do get a sterring wheel wobble at about 60mph either foot on or off the pedel.

Hello Twinkle  [W4]

Check the lower/rear engine mounting, also called roll restrictor as the bolts have been know to sheer off, you will need to remove the undercover to do this.

For wheel wobble check steering joints first and have wheels balanced

Ok will do, i know the 2.3 galaxy shuffered with engine mount problems with sheering bolts. didnt know the tdi did as well.

And going to have wheels balanced and tracking done at some point. I like to keep the tracking checked with all these pot holes about now.

It's less common for the TDI to suffer the mount but not uncommon at all - it's also known for the bushing to come out of the mount so it can look fine on inspection!

Wheel balancing from a decent garage is critical on Galaxy's as they seem overly fussy lol!

We defo get the balancing checked.

I have noticed if i brake very sharp at like 5 mph, i get a knock nose. hoping it might be the mount.
