VCDS Lite Question

Ok chaps, finally got VCDS lite to work on another laptop to see if I could get to the bottom of my auto gearbox issue (sticks in 1st when cold/fine after 10 minutes idling).

Its the firs time I've used VCDS so not sure what I'm doing but basically I ran a scan on the auto gearbox and engine modules. A few seconds after I started the scan and the ports connected, the 'Fault Codes' box became selectable (i.e. not greyed out) but the spinning line at the top of the VCDS interface - which I guess is the equivalent of an egg timer - kept spinning. My question is, how long does it take to scan a module? Is it a case of as soon as the Fault Code box lights up, its ready to view or do I have to wait for the spinning line (egg timer) to finish? I did wait a few minutes on each module scan but the thing didn't stop...

Anyway the only fault code that has come up is a speed senor fault. I have cleared this and the wife has now gone on the school run so I will check later if it returns.

Could this be connected with the auto gearbox problem?

The spinny box relates to it communicating, it's not quite the same as an egg timer as it stays spinning at all times and is more to let you know you have comms. Normally, once you select a control module it should show all options within about 2 seconds. Click fault codes and again, they should be displayed within just a few seconds.

I *think* I can give you good news though, YES the speed sensor will cause gearbox issues and more importantly I believe its mounted on TOP of the box, not inside it - so could turn out to be a cheap fix!

I wont count my chickens just yet but hopefully some good news there! I will run a scan again once the fault re-occurs (probably after the school run in the morning when cold) and see if the speed sensor fault returns.

Is replacement a DIY job? I'm reasonably 'spanner competent' so would prefer to have a go if possible.

Has anyone done this before on the forum? A 'how to' or some pointers would be helpful as would a part number perhaps?
