Hello all, I have been absent from here for a while as I sold my 1999 Galaxy to one of my sons, it's still  going. I replaced it with an ex demo 2022 VW Caddy estate car and have regretted it ever since, rubbish lane guidance that gets it wrong as much as it gets it right, touch screen to make simple change to heater setting, poor performance radio drops out all the time, and many more flakey features as well as terrible rear view due the to massive door pillars.
On the bright side I plan to buy a 2005 TDI Alhambra from a friend who has always had it serviced and never had any real trouble.  I took it for a test drive and the only thing that concerned me a little was that it was a bit hard to get it into 3rd gear, friend said you have to push it, he is used to it.
I'm going to buy it anyway, and I don't mind spending a bit if it needs it, are there known gearbox issues? it is the 6 speed VW version, my old Gal had a lovely 5 speed Ford box which requires only gentle operation.

Any thoughts most welcome.
Best regards
Ian

We have a manual 09 Alhambra with BRT engine at 135K, and it is 2nd gear which can be troublesome. Ours seems worst when it is cold and it is rushed into 2nd. Pausing very briefly before attempting selection helps and it seems to improve as it warms up. I am by no means a gearbox expert, but changing the gearbox oil cannot do any harm, and there is another VW forum out there where you will find advice to use the appropriate grade of Red Line MT-90 and Slick 50 additive for the 2nd gear issue, which will be my next step if 2nd in our box gets any worse. I wonder whether that might help with 3rd, as well. There may also be solutions involving removing the end-caps from the box and inserting shims under the circlips securing the bearings on the end of the shafts. It is worth doing some browsing around this forum, and elsewhere, to see what other advice can be found.

And of course, it might be worth checking over the external selectors which can be seen on the top of the box. Good luck with your new acquisition.

Thank you, I look forward to taking it on.

Did you acquire the 05 Alhambra and how are you getting on with 3rd gear?
