Installing a rear dashcam

Hi everyone!!

I have a dashcam in my Alhamb which automatically switches on when the ignition is on. Very handy.

I was wondering if you have any advice for fitting a rear-facing dashcam at the back of the car. It seems to be a little more complex because obviously the boot door opens and also the 12v socket is permanently on. What would be the best way of fitting one I wonder.

So working from the back

removed the tailgate trim and the trim round the number plate light

Mounted the Camera on the number plate light trim
Took a feed from the reversing lamps (that way your dash cam should switch to reverse mode when you reverse)
pull off the rubber trim on the ceiling by the grommet in the tailgate
feed the wire down the tailgate arm, trough the grommet and into the ceiling void
tuck the wire into the rubber ceiling trim down the length of the car
My main camera is at the top of windscreen so just feed the wire round and plugged in but if its on the dash then just run down the a post, pop the side cover of the dashboard and run up to the camera

Wouldn?t taking feed off reverse lamps only record when in reverse so if you was rear ended you would have no camera footage of the incident.

No has three Cameras Front / Rear / internal all three record all the time
When reverse is selected the front unit goes to Rear Camear full screen to give you a reversing camera with lines

You can buy windscreen mounted cameras that cover both front and back.  Rear is not as good as front coverage but you only need an indication of what happened in most rear-end situations.  In conjunction with the front camera showing, for instance, that you were stationary when the collision occured that would be perfectly adequate.  And you already have the fixings in place.

I was thinking I could just plug a dashcam into that socket and then stick it on the rear window. However how would I turn it on and off each time I use the car without lifting the boot open and plugging it in?

The rear facing ones come in two basic types, one of them is an extra module that plugs into the front camera but faces rearward. The other is a seperate camera, either linked by a long wire and triggered from the front one, or fed independently.

You can fit a second dashcam to the rear, but finding a switched live might be more difficult. I'd suspect you'd need to run something from the front, or switch the rear sockets feed over so its only live with the ignition on and use that.

Doesn?t the rear wiper motor have a switched live for the parking switch? If so you could intercept that either in tailgate or above roof lining depending where you are fitting dash cam.

No, you can buy a windscreen mounted camera that has two lenses.  One faces forward, the other looks through the cabin and out of the rear screen.
