Is it an automatic or manual gearbox? Manual ones have an issue with a bolt coming loose on the selector sometimes which can drop inside the box, worth having a look at the selector mechanism on top of the box. Autos can have issues with fluid (poor condition or not enough of it in the box) or solenoid issues, but the later should show up on a scan with VCDS and the former more likely when the box is cold.

Need more info to tell you any more than that really - what type of gearbox, when does it do it?

You need a shim in the end float on the gearbox.
Itââ,¬â,,¢s a cheap fix.
Chances are you could also get stuck in reverse or second, also.

Thanks for your h.elp its a 2006 manual cheers

I've just done a reference library writeup on fitting the gearbox shim if it's of help to anybody. It's not an ideal fix but it's silenced the gearbox whine that had started to develop particularly when changing into 5th.

I drive a Seat Alhambra 1.9Tdi which has 115bhp and an automatic gearbox.

I am happy to help you with all your questions. I am not a qualified mechanic but seem to be better at fixing my car than even the most experienced garages.

I have lots of friends here and very much enjoy talking with you all. Always remember, a motor car is a serious tool and should be treated with respect. Put your safety first, always.
