alternator tdi mk2

pulley wheel has just come of alternator
leaving no drive as belt is slack pulley may be down on undertray but have not got under car yet
how does this fix to alternator?
all that is showing is a plain collar at end of shaft
any ideas please.I should be able to remove alternator if i can borrow tools

just found pulley wheel
in engine bay internals of it
smashed up.
is this a complete replacement
alternator unit required?

Hi Tony
You don't need to buy complete alternator but you do need special socket tool to remove, prices do vary I paid Ã,£50 all in but took my alternator into the shop and they changed it over for me.
I know Greger's had the tool but might not be practical owing to both your locations
I do believe you can replace it without removing alternator on the diesel variants.

Time important
so I took the easy way out
and am getting new alternator
for 2pm OUCH!
then refitting after that

Um that's gonna hit the wallet.
Always useful to do nice clear photo's they help others when describing the operation.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
I was getting groaning noises from steering
and poor power steering assist.
when I thought about it later
The tensioner was vibrating quite a bit
as well.Ignorance is bliss!
now the replacement is on
Things are back to normal, Quiet steering etc.
So I suggest if you hear strange noises on steering
check pulley on alternator
replacing this will cost Ã,£50-Ã,£60
instead of new alternator at Ã,£160 or thereabouts
plus fitting.reasonable DIY job.
Chris might like to add some helpful diagnostic hints on this.

bear in mind it may have been the tensioner at fault in the 1st place that with all the bouncing etc that threw your pulley?
iirc the pulley wheel from gsf cost me about 50 quid and the tensioner was about the same from vw.
and the tool cost me about 20 odd quid.

I think there's been more cases of losing the aircon pulley than the alternator pulley the latter causing chirping and squealing noises with the usual effect of jerky steering and sometimes alternator workshop warning light flashing up.

more then likely chris,but when my air-con pulley was thrown i didnt get any kind of warning light come up.mind you did get the horrendous noise of nails spinning in a tumble dryer.
