Does anyone know what the voltage o my battery should be to start car properly. Thank you. Mike

12.6v and above is fully charged below that is considered as needing a charge. Not quite as simply as that as you could have a battery showing good charge but when put under load when starting drop right down.

If your finding it is low, its worth a good check of the fusebox thats attached to the battery) the one down the front of the car with the 5 wire fuse links inside it). The mk2 is known to melt them due to poor crimps on the ends of the cables. This is also where the power from the alternator back to the battery comes to, so if its badly connected it may not charge as well as it should do.

Your looking for signs of wires getting hot (insulation hard/stiff/flaking for example) - the thick ones going into the box, or melted plastic housing on the box. Either is a sign you have a problem there that wants to be dealt with before it becomes more of a problem - done early enough you can save the box, there is instructions in the faq section for fixing it, but the basic fix is to replace the terminal on the end with one soldered onto the wire rather than crimped onto the end of it (can be crimped as well as soldered, but you need the solder to get a good connection there)

I change my battery every 5 years and always get the biggest one that fits
