Stopped for fuel at the garage yesterday and my clutch pedal went to the floor and didn't come back up. Left a nice pool of fluid under the car. Recovery said it was the clutch master or slave.

How do i know which has failed before i get it into a garage and deal with the hefty repair bill.

I believe if its the master cylinder then it can be done as a diy job but the slave requires gearbox removal etc?

Car is a 56 plate Galaxy Mk3 2.0tdci manual

Leaking master cylinder will usually leak onto the carpet etc. Slave cylinder leak will run out the bottom of the gearbox bell housing and as you rightly say requires gearbox be removed.

Thanks for that. Does the clutch have to be replaced as well?

Been quoted between Ã,£450 and Ã,£575 is that about right?

Unless you have recently had a clutch I would factor in a complete kit change and also a DMF if itââ,¬â,,¢s a diesel and it has done a decent chunk of mileage. To pay for the box off it makes sense to do the lot as Sodââ,¬â,,¢s law says it will fail in a few months meaning job needs doing again.

So would the DMF be an extra on top of the quoted Ã,£450 price?

How much does a clutch cost
I drive a Seat Alhambra 1.9Tdi which has 115bhp and an automatic gearbox.

I am happy to help you with all your questions. I am not a qualified mechanic but seem to be better at fixing my car than even the most experienced garages.

I have lots of friends here and very much enjoy talking with you all. Always remember, a motor car is a serious tool and should be treated with respect. Put your safety first, always.

Yes unfortunately so DMF is probably about the same again I would imagine

The top end quoted cost sounds like a complete clutch replacement, with DMF and slave.  Just make sure it is LUK or Sachs.
