Relay 109 Failure on Alhambra 2003 1.9 Tdi

Hi there, Please can some help. On my 2003 1.9 Tdi Alhamdra the diesel pump Relay 109 was buzzing after the car stalled and failed to start.  I've replace it but car still wont start!! any ideas


Where is that located. Is it in the tank? under the rear floor?

If the relay was buzzing then there could be some sort of electrical burnout happening here. Perhaps the pump is broken and causing a short circuit that burnt out our relay? Or maybe there is a fault in the wiring. I think you should check out the fuel pump. I am, however, not a qualified mechanic (just like most of them! Ha ha!) :-)

Check voltage at relay 109 coil see what you are getting,from memory this is fed from ignition switch. The buzzing and lack of running could indicate the coil is trying to pull in but does not quite have the power to do so

While your there, have a good look at the relay contacts where the relay plugs in, they can manage to push out when your swapping the relay over. Or they could be burnt or not making good contact if they have managed to stretch slightly.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I've tried new relay, no luck. Checked both relays at work for functionality, both only require approx 6 Vdc to energise although the coil resistance and current drawn varies for relay to relay.  I will continue fault finding at the weekend, I wont be beaten, well not yet anyway

Also from whats said above - if its fed from the ignition switch these can fail (As I've had one fail, but not doing exactly the fault you have got). The electrical bit of the switch will unclip from the barrel part and can be replaced seperately.

The feed to that relay I think comes from the bottom righthand side fuse on the 2.3 petrol models (At least if that fuse is removed, the symptoms are the same, engine won't start, and no attempt to crank, rapid flashing led on the drivers door panel). It might be worth checking the led on the door, as this will indicate if theres a problem with the immobiliser (Which is the usual problem if you have a failing 109 relay, intermittent failure to start and rapid flashing on the led).

These also were symptoms of a bad starter motor for me may be worth a check

Well found the problem, having replaced relay 109 to no avail.  Broken lead on the negative battery terminal. Happy boy again

I once had an auto electrician try to change a speaker on my car and he was clueless, had no idea how to do it at all. Sometimes a little patience and investigation pays dividends!
