Thinking of getting a Galaxy - Should I worry about the DMF?

I'm looking at getting a Mk2 1.9 TDi, but I'm all worried about the Dual Mass Flywheel issues rearing their heads. I'm slightly concerned that this is too much of a problem to ignore. What should I be listening out for / feeling when test driving.

Am I just worrying over nothing?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Metallic grinding noises and vibration.
Can be costly to replace but don't let that put you off buying a galaxy as most modern diesels are fitted with DMF

With VCDS lite (full version) need a code clearing or want to scan for faults in the north kent area, PM me. All for a pint of Strongbow.

Nearly all diesels (of the 2000+ year) have DMF's fitted and they are expensive when they fail. You should be aware but not worried ;)

Imaging a marble in a metal can being spun around - it's that sort of sound, and as Chris say's there is also normally an uneven vibration that accompanies the sound.

My advise would be to test drive a few and listen to what sounds "normal"... also familiarise yourself with the noise a bad DMF makes (there are lots of videos on youtube) for example: VW DMF Fail - You need to listen quite carefully as the engine noise is greatly exaggerated on this one but you can make out the metallic sound in the background and it's especially evident when the engine is turned off at the end.

Thank you everyone taking the time to reply, It's pretty obviously listening to some of the You Tube videos as to what it sounds like, should hopefully spot that! :)

I'd forgotten what a mare buying a second hand car would be, so many 'Back Bedroom Car Dealers' out there, it's gonna be fun finding one from someone reputable, at the mileage and price I want! Hoping to part ex my old car to chip a bit off the total too.

The hunt continues!
