Hi all, first time poster here! Please Be gentle! I'm mechanically challenged so please don't go technical on me, thanks!

I'm having a go at replacing the water pump on my MK1 1.9tdi (2000). By hook and by crook I've cleared most of the path to the water pump which I've almost got a clear run at, but I'm having a bit of a ball ache with a couple of things!

First: THE POWER STEERING PUMP. I've removed the bolts holding it in place as well as the bolt securing the main pipe. I have managed to work it so it moves quite freely but I cannot free it from the mount. I was wondering if it is held in by some pivot bolt that I can't see, or do I just need to be a bit more forceful?

Secondly: Where are the bottom bolts that hold the LOWER TIMING COVER in place, I can't find them anywhere, I believe there should be two of them?!

Help on this would be extremely well received, as would be any images, diagrams etc.

Thanks,
Danny.

Assuming this is a VE engine?

Have you removed the crank pulley as the bolts for lower timing cover will be behind that.

PAS pump I am not familiar with these engines but would assume it just needs some persuasion with a lever bar if all bolts are out

Hi Johnny,

I guess you mean VW engine, so the answer is yes, it is.

Yep, I've removed the crank pulley so I'll have a closer look in the daylight although I was expecting the bolts to be under the camshaft sprocket somewhere, its just that I cannot see or feel them.

I'm thinking you're right with the PAS pump, that was my gut feeling, but I didn't want to cause any unnecessary damage if I was wrong!

cheers, Johnny

The engine is either a VE type, or PD type. A 2000 year vehicle could be either as I'd suspect they changed the type of engine with the mk2.

If you click the ford KB link above, there are various posts there, the mk2 engine bay should be a pd type - Would suspect yours looks quite different to this, in which case it should be a VE engine. The VW and Ford badged diesel engines are the same anyway apart from the badges on the top.

It may help to look at the parts listing, as most (but not all times) it will show the approximate location of the bolts that hold the covers in place and such.

Hi Brian,
like I said...I'm no mechanic!

I'm guessing in that case my Galaxy is a Mk1 VE as I did check a lot of the stuff on the KB link and a lot of the stuff on there is  for the MKII and the engine is quite different  particularly the water pump. My Galaxy 1.9TDI has this water pump.
