Oil loss unexplained

A couple of days before Christmas, I checked oil level on my 1.8 Zetec engine in my 2007 Galaxy which showed halfway up the dipstick.  A few days after Christmas, I went on a 50mile journey and on arrival we could see traces of oil down the sides of the car. Checking on the oil level when the engine had cooled down, there was no trace of oil.

Fortunately, I had an oil contained in the vehicle so filled up.  Driving home with only one stop to let the dogs out for 15 minutes, the oil level did not change.  Even when I returned home and checked the next day it was till full.

I have been using the car since on relatively short shopping/hospital  trips of no more than 20miles each way and oil level is still showing full.

Can any one explain the dramatic loss after the 50 mile journey please? :-\

Sounds a strange one your best to get it in air and remove under trays to see if you can identify any leaks
