Back pressure coolant forced out of expansion tank.

Get one problem sorted and another appears. 1.8tdci Galaxy 2008. 142000 miles. 
I had back pressure back in June and ended up having head gasket changed, timing belts both and water pump changed at same time. Since then had coolant problems off and on. Have had it back to garage and he said it looked as if the coolant had soot in it so he removed the water hoses from the egr cooler and joined them together. This appeared to solve my problem when only water, but after he flushed and refilled with anifreeze I have the back pressure problem again. Could it be an air lock?
When I got back this morning from a short run about 10 miles temp guage normal stopped car turned engine off. I checked the expansion tank and coolant was right to the top and had some forced out. I then checked the hoses, bottom hose hot, top  hose cold (both under pressure). Then hiss noise as a hose poped at the back of the engine.
I have another question regarding the hose set up on my engine the hose from the thermostat housing is going to the bottom right hand corner of the radiator (stood looking at engine) and my top hose is connected to the pipe going to the water pump. I always thought that the water passed through the thermostat into the top of the radiator and then out of the bottom. Or on my engine the water flows the other way???
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

When you had head gasket done did the head get checked for cracks and flat face?
Air locks could cause the issue but as it was ok for a while I would not be suspecting air lock to be the cause.


As for the hose set up I am not familiar on those engines.

Thanks for your comments Johnny I am led to believe the head was checked and skimmed.
Found the heater pipe that had split, just where it connects to the block, as usual down the back with very little access. Got it repaired and refilled the system with 50-50 water and antifreeze. Ran engine on idle with cap off until thermostat opened and the top hose became hot (as I said early my thermostat opens and flows into the bottom of my radiator). Replaced cap then ran engine at 2000 revs for 10 minutes and then 3000 revs for 5 secs then back to idle and checked around no leaks. Now shes cooling off over night and will check in the morning top up if necessary then take it for a run. 


I have same engine.  Will try to remember to check hose routing later today.

Been out for about a ten mile drive at various speeds and revs and things appear ok. Level in expansion tank appears steady. Will run for a week and report back.

That would be great if you could check your engines coolant flow from thermostat.
My set up just goes against everything I know, my logic tells me even though the radiator is on its side (so to speak) I would expect the inlet from thermostat would be the highest, flow horizontally, then out of the lowest point.


Thanks Mike for looking at your coolant pipes. Well I am pleased yours are routed the same way as mine so will stop worrying about that.
