Hey boys and girls! My 2.0 has been suffering with crappy MPG recently and a bit of hesitation. I read the post from mirez about manifold cleaning on the mk2 so thought I would take a look at mine. Very different to the mk2 but ultimately mine is also covered in shit so needs a clean but my worry is that the manifold is plastic not metal so can I still use the chemical method?

I did my old x type plastic manifold in a bath of paraffin overnight to loosen the crap same with the EGR valve.

Soaking in Diesel should be ok as well - if the plastic can cope with the EGR rubbish going back though it, a soaking in fuel overnight shouldn't cause any major problems. Might be an idea to remove the gaskets before soaking though.
