Hi to all
first time on ford site I wondered if any one could give me some advise as I'm stuck !
I own a ford galaxy 1.9tdi 02 plate pretty bullet proof until today
I have changed the fuel filter .
got the car started after no problems
took for a test drive after about mile cut out . I called  green flag whilst waiting kept trying to start car after five minutes  I got the car started and drove home thinking there maybe a airlock. stripped fuel filter back down put new clamps on fuel pipes got the car started and went for a test drive .......same thing happened ....called green flag again but this time I waited ....green flag guy said maybe a faulty filter... got car started drove home striped filter down again upon inspection there seamed to be no fuel in ..thinking it was a faulty filter I put the old one back on ...started car took for test drive . as you pull up at junction /lights .. car cuts out . seams like it's starved of fuel .
As anyone had this problem before any advise most appreciated

I think theres an intank pump on the diesels, if thats the case you should be able to tell if its working by disconnecting the inlet to the filter and seeing if any diesel appears (stick the end over something to catch anything that comes out!)

Were you changing the filter as routine maintenance, or to try and solve a problem?

Yes diesel does have in tank pump you should hear it prime when turning ignition on. You can check by taking feed pipe off filter and putting in container to see if it spurts fuel out.
However as it occurred after filter change I would be more inclined to check the thermostatic valve for cracks/knackered o rings after it has been disturbed.

Also it could be complete coincidence and the pick up in tank could be blocked causing poor fuel flow,it is not unheard of to happen when I had mine out it was in a bit of a mess.

Hi Rob and  [W4]
If you have a MK2 with a PD engine then you will definitely have a pump in the tank (low pressure) as well as a high pressure pump which is driven from the engine.
You will usually hear the pump momentarily when you first switch on the ignition, another check is to remove the filter intake pipe from the filter can, this is connected to the right hand connector facing the rear, switch the ignition on and off a few times without cranking the engine, you should get a good squirt of fuel (be prepared to catch it in a jam jar or similar.

Another point is when you removed the filter first time did you remove the pipes from the thermo valve or did you pull the clip and leave the pipes connected to the valve as I have a feeling you have mixed the pipes up especially if the car was running OK before changing filter.

Good morning

Thanks for the advise I will check pipes . I have been out to the car this morning' you can hear pump in rear of the car as ignition is turned on . the car fired up first time . The thermo pipe does that refer to something that gets hot ? Reason I ask it get very hot when running . I did not remove the two pipes one goes to the rear of the engine other from the front I assume this is correct . I only changed the fuel filter as I not changed since I owned the car about 8 months . Wish I had left well alone . will advise once test drive

Thanks

On the PD engine fuel passes through galleries in the cylinder head to reach the injectors this can get quite hot and is returned to the tank through a small radiator under the car.

Be sure the filter is fitted the same way round as in photo.

Thanks for picture . All fitted the same .I took for a run this morning after about 15 min cut out again I left it in gear and it kicked back in . Managed to get back home.
I have ordered new fuel filter and thermo valve from ford . should be here tomorrow just in case air is getting into the system .

will advise

You 100% have supply to right hand inlet and outlet from filter to top of tandem pump and then return from tandem (bottom)to valve then return other side of valve?

Good Afternoon yes pipes are correct . I have brought new filter and valve from ford ..Ã,£91.00 ouch.
fitted parts cut pipe back a little to aid with seal . fitted clamp on fuel pipe fittings .......And Low and behold it's still the same .... I'm starting to think it may be something else now ... ticks over all day you give it some wellie 30 seconds or so it cuts out starved of fuel ....maybe high pressure pump ? I may have to visit garage Any advise would be most appreciated I'm at a dead end .. wish I'd have not changed filter now.

Hi just a quick question do you think it could be the fuel vacuum pump ?

Highly unlikely I think my next action would be is remove the intank pump and clean the filter gauze, this is done by removing the rear seats and lifting the carpet behind drivers seat and second row seats there's a plate in the floor to access the pump/fuel gauge unit.

Thank you for taking time to reply

No special tools needed to get in tank pump out just standard hand tools.
