Galaxy MK 2 2003 front cigarette lighter removal

Hi guys
I would like to change the bulb and or the lighter unit on the front center consul as the bulb has gone and the unit is a bit grubby.
I took out the center consul but the metal part of the lighter unit wont budge.
The Haynes manual says its just a case of pushing out the metal body of the unit but it only slightly turns and wont push out.

Would also like advice on how the three wires would be connected to an after market one if I ever manage to remove the old one.

They do just push in and have some metal tangs that keep it there,they can be tight to get out mind. Can you access the rear to push the tangs in to aid removal?

As for the wires there will be 2 thicker ones which are power and earth,usually earth is brown on VAG cars but the one that goes to centre will be live. The smaller one is lights on feed,the bulb earths through the fag lighter housing.

I had taken out the consul completely but could not push the metal body out but will try again in the morning now I know there are metal tangs that holds it in.
Just one question  , the existing unit is pretty flimsy where the bulb holder is connected to the metal body and was looking at replacing for a new one, but most after market ones have 1 or 2 wires that connect to the bulb holder  unlike the original which is connected by 3 wires through a multi plug at the rear.
Would you know which way the wires would go to an after market one ?

If they have 2 wires at bulb holder then it is not earthed through the fag lighter like the standard one and you would need to wire an earth in. With a standard filament bulb earth and live can go either way just make sure there is not a metal tab off it that earths to lighter housing.

As for removing old one I have had to mangle the top of housing and illuminating ring with side cutters in the past as they can really stick in.
