v reg ford galaxy heater dead

hi guys. ive just joined the forum having bought a galaxy which i love but the car has got a few daft faults that hopefully i can sort with help from you guys on here.  the problem ive got is that heater blower and air con is dead and wont work on any of the settings although all the display works but just doesnt do anything. i looked online and found that it could be down to the resistor pack been duff which i replaced today which made no difference. any ideas guys? thanks in advance  8)

Assuming this is a digital display with buttons and not the manual type with three rotary knobs?

Does the panel flash for a few seconds when turning on ignition? if it does a diagnostic code has been logged or may simply be a blown fuse.

You could also try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to allow modules to reset (have radio code handy)

hey chris thanks for the warm welcome a speedy reply  yeah it has the digital display and yups it flashes   when the ignition is first turned on. it also makes a whiring noise............not sure if its ment to do that? ive been looking online to see if i can find a online haynes manual till i can get hold of a book. guna head to the library tomorrow to see if they have one.  any idea what the fuse number is and where? only just discovered tonight that there is another fusebox under the bonnet lol

Um interesting about the other fusebox, these are normally on the MK2, have PM'd you with fuse info

The flashing display could also mean lack of gas in the aircon system but that shouldn't stop the fans working.

The whirring noise is likely to be the small fan inside the display unit that samples the air inside the car.

Could you post me back a piccy of the other fuse box

It may also help you to get VCDS to do your own diagnostics, look in the knowledge base for details.

hey chris. got the fuse info. brill . i read about the second fuse box online but when ive popped the bonnet to look for it it dont have one lol. spoke to a guy today that has a w reg galaxy ghia x.......... same as mine but mines v reg and he said mine is a mk2.  i thought it was a mk1. im not bothard if the air con dont work or ever works as long as the blower works and it gets hot.  i take it by you know about this chris you have had the same dead fan issue? had the car in bits today to look at the fan and wiring. ive also checked for voltage at the motor wiring which they aint.i have put power to fan motor with a 12v tester probe and worked on full speed but the motor was a hard to turn by hand. also read somewhere that there is relays for the blower motor. question is where lol. for the help

Will have a look at wiring diagrams later regarding relays will also check on fuse allocation as there's probably more than one fuse covering the heating system, is there anything coming from the rear heater? this is controlled separately from the panel.

nice one   where does the heat come from in the rear?  as in it will have some kind of vents somewhere if it has heating in the rear. dont think mines does. as far as im aware non of its working.the guy i spoke to today asked if i had aux heating i think he said then looked up on the roof panel of the van.are the controls ment to be on the ceiling if it has it coz mine aint got non.as for the link you put up. it made me laugh as mines the top piccy and its even the same colour lol.

Right you only have aircon in the rear if there are vents in the roof lining, they are quite rare.

After looking through the diagrams fuses 19,21,22,34, with 19 also for central locking so may be a link there with your C/L post.

The relay is in the second layer in the fuse box and has 114 on the cover.

The rear heater on standard models the vents are floor level on passenger side rear trim arch panel.

You wont have controls on the roof when you have the digital display

You said how does the heat get to the rear? look under the passenger floor you should see two pipes going from engine and enter the car by the n/s wheel arch, while your there look out for the booster heater, you should see a small exhaust pipe coming from it, will explain more about that if you confirm it's there.

chris.  i had the fuse box out on the car today to have a look to see if i could see anything to miss but no luck. looked at the fuses but didnt find any that had blown.also found the second layer of the fuse box with the relays in.need to look up how to test a relay to see if it is duff.mines the ghia x model if that tells you anything? gunna try and do a temporary fix tomorrow by running  12v feed to the fan motor with a inline switch and try to manualy adjust where the air comes from the dash to the windscreen. hopefully should get warm ram air even if the system dont work as it should. i,ll let you know how i get on.

One thing when your checking fuses don't just visually look at them test them with a multimeter and also make sure that 12 volt is present on the fuse box contacts, in case there's a power supply fault to the fuse box.

not all the fuse holders will be live all the time will they?  as in some will by live only when the ignition is on? beginning to think this might have to go to a sparky to fix......... unless the faults will be picked up with a code reader? probably not im guessing

Correct not all will be live, any testing should be done with ignition on.
The fact that the display is flashing means faults have been logged.

so would a code reader delete these logged faults? or just read them?  thinking maybe this is why the heater aint working. got a haynes now so i,ll have a look in there to see if it says out. thanks again for you help.

Yes you can read and clear logged fault, what we normally do is make a note of any fault codes present then clear the codes, give the car a drive then recheck and see if they come back.

guna buy a code reader then if i cant suss this out. will a cheap one do or does it have to be a decent expensive one? seen them on a well know auction site thats all  its not advisible to pull each fuse one by one on the car to find a blown fuse is it? got no reverse lights or interior lights and need to find the bust fuse. they both went off at same time so guessing they are linked.

chris  . got a laptop. was just a little concerned about pulling the fuse for the airbag and it going off or sumit lol.got aftermarket radio so no code needed.  im guessing i can get vcds lite off the net?

Don't think air-bags are covered by a fuse but if you are worried disconnect battery while testing fuses.
Some after market radio's can interfere with the diagnostic circuit so you may need to unplug it  while interface lead is plugged in.

the heater decided to kick in today briefly for like 10 seconds slowly then croaked again. also herd the little motor under dash trying to move but couldnt. believe the motor is to move the flaps under the dash to choose between windscreen/forward vents or floor vents.what ever is wrong it is sumit daft,.

hi guys.  just a quick update what ive tryed to fix the fault..........removed the motor and put 12 directly to it and its works on full speed. checked the brushes. they are a little low but its still fires up with 12v to it. located the 114 relay on the second level and replaced it with one from a vw sharran.........got the feeling its the wrong one.vw ones have a different number i believe. dont know the number of the sharran type though.but the relay i got has the same pins on it.replaced the red resistor{hedgehog} still no voltage at the resistor or the motor. only thing i can think of is the didgi display is duff. any ideas guys? this is doing my head in.

Let us know the number on the new relay, can tell you what it's for.
Even though the pins are the same it may have a different function, I gave you 114 from the sharan manual.
Are you still waiting for your interface lead?

hey chris.  ive got relays....... numbers 95 and 169.the vw sharan i got these from didnt have relay 114. unless it ha been robbed all ready?  i got the interface lead now but aint plugged it into the car to check  for logged faults yet. hopefully get to do that tomorrow. any do,s or donts and is there a certian software version i need.? just hopeing plugging my laptop into the car wont fry it orthe cars electrics

hey guys. well got a replacement 114 relay today through the post and still no joy.  however.........while in the boot today i had a look in the left compartment as the haynes said there was a blower motor in there and a found a servo motor/ sensor? unsure which missing and the wire just hiding. wondering if this is why the display flashing indicating a fault.i hate man made faults

aint got a piccy but can take one .the only thing that is visable when the cover is removed is the plastic ducting the motor is mounted in and a recess on the end of the ducting where the motor/sensor is missing.the wire that im assuming plugs into the above is just sat where the two 12volt sockets are

If the the black circular looking thing then IIRC that's a flap motor, there is a temperature probe on the ducting but thats just a two pin plug... how many have you got?

handy you had a piccy lol. i aint removed the rear plastics as you have on yours.just the plastic compartment door. there is 2 small pegs visable in the piccy nearest to the rear light cluster and thats where the part screws to the ducting. ive sorted the laptop out to use the code reader on it but i need to find out the part it needs........are they all the same or is they different types?  as in will one fit from a alhamba/sharan ect ect? i did hear a whiring noise from the rear ducting yesterday so i think there must be more than one servo i there. could be wrong lol.
