Kangaroo Diesel below 2000rpm.

Hi, my 2003 diesel with 65K on the clock drove fine yesterday, but on start up today the revs were rising & falling on tickover. When driving the car it was very jerky pulling away under 2000rpm. The Haynes manual says at 60000 miles injectors need re conditioning. Would injectors deteriorate gradually? Or is this likely to be something else?
After 5 miles the tickover settled down & after 12 miles there seemed to be a slight improvement pulling away, but still jerky.
Is it ok to drive the car like this? It seems fine when the speed is 30 in 4th or faster in higher gears.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Check MAF sensor connections if OK unplug sensor, see if that stops the erratic running if it does replace MAF but not with one of those cheap import ones.

Hi Chris,
I replaced the sensor & air filter & all is still mostly well, but I get an occasional "Chuff" from the engine.
It doesn't happen every journey & it feels like a single cylinder misfire.
Sometimes it happens several times on a journey, so I'm guessing another sensor is playing up.
Would it be wise to replace the crankshaft sensor, or should I wait until it gets worse & is easier to diagnose?
My VAG com doesn't work on my car. I think it may be the after market tow electrics upsetting it.
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Peter.

I would be more inclined to think injector harness is breaking down, fairly common on the PD lumps or EGR valve is sticking open slightly.

Are you using the original factory fitted stereo or an aftermarket one? This commonly on VAG group cars will stop the diagnostics working. Unplug it and try again might be enough to sort it. Does your VAG com work on other cars ok?

The injector harness as Jonnyroper says is a common failure though, and can be replaced. That should give some fault codes though.

Problem with injector harness it does not give fault codes usually on these lumps.
