MOT Fail - end of the road?

Well my manual Galaxy failed it's MOT today, with quite a list!.

Strut Mount on O/S gone
O/S Steering Gaiter split.
Front wheel alignment.
Exhaust centre and rear boxes leaking
Corrosion to O/S front inner chassis/sill area
Corrosion to N/S rear inner chassis
Corrosion to O/S rear inner chassis
O/S Headlamp aim too far right.
3 tyres nearly illegal.


I have owned this car since new way back in 2002 - it has done  231000 miles ( albeit with a replaced engine at 215,000)

All of the mechanical bits are not too serious but the welding will probably prove too expensive to justify along with other faults.

So I am going to look for another Galaxy - preferably cheap to last a year or two and scrap this one.

The end of an era.

I still have the other Auto one so I am not motorless but very depressed!.

That's a shame and also quite a typical fail for that age. I brought my Sharan last year with 222000 on it needing virtually same amount of work. I done the lot myself in a couple of days. I wouldn't scrap it. You be surprised how much it would go for on the likes of Ebay.

The mechanical stuff is easy it's the welding that would cause me grief - there is a lot of it and it doesn't come cheap. I used to do it myself , had a mig welder etc but I have a pacemaker and they don't mix with welders!

Similar situation to you bigjeeze, galaxy got through not last year with advisories for suspension components corroded, and also suspension area prescribed area corroded hole found but not within a mounting area or something. Decided I have had my use out of her and going to say goodbye before next MOT in June. As you mechanical itââ,¬â,,¢s fine new brakes all round,tyres all round,lower arms,track rods and engine/gearbox spot on. But welding I cannot do myself so decided I will be letting it go in next month or so.
She is showing her age now though with some scabs forming on rear arches and outer sills.
Got an Alfa 159 SW on the drive having some TLC ready to see some action.
Got to say the high mileage gal I purchased 2 years ago has served us well but kids are older now so donââ,¬â,,¢t need the space so she will be going on the bay soon.

Mine failed yesterday ffs. garage was supposed to phone me back with the repair costs.
Rear caliper seized, they said it needs replacing, corrosion to both front jacking points and seals and one tyre.
just about to pop down there as still waiting on a phonecall from them.

The seized caliper I did question as to why it needs a new one. They said a part that fails which is quite common means a new caliper.
It failed last year in the same garage but not on brakes, I expected it to fail as
the handbrake would not hold the car on hills. Yeah I should have mentioned it but I'd spent
a bit getting the MOT as it had failed their on other things.

Just got back from the garage.  Bunch of ARS*****
I was told they are so busy and wont be able to look at my car until Monday. Got a brush off apology and told I could take my car away!!

Can I legally take my car elsewhere now it's failed the MOT?

Legally no. Needs to be recovered or left at the mot station.

AFAIK the new rules mean that once its failed its failed regardless of what was left to run of the old MoT so no, now its failed it needs to be repaired but, the rules used to allow a car to be driven to and from an MoT station and I don't think thats changed so you should be able to drive it home if you plan to do the work yourself.

BJ, only the rear welding would bother me. The front area is exceptionally common now but having taken on the job countless times its actually not structural at all, the area is just a box section on top of the chassis outrigger (if its the common bit) so you can repair it very easily with some sheet metal.

I have had a think - I did some pricing and the parts required (inc tyres) should be around the Ã,£350 mark. So I reckon if the welding can be done for Ã,£200 ish then I will go ahead and hopefully keep it another year.

Thank you for your replies and apologies to bigjeeze for jumping on your thread. Like yourself I'm unable to
carry out the welding work due to health. Waiting on back surgery and it's pizzing me right off.

1!Well after searching for a new car and noy finding anything I like I have decided to fix the galaxy.  Welding priced at Ã,£250, Parts at Ã,£141 ( which includes a  front strut in case I can't get the top nut off).  I will probably buy some budget tyres - I found some with XL etc and write up seem OK. SO all in should come out at Ã,£500- Ã,£600 - cheap motoring for a year ( I hope!)
