1.9 tdi snapped glow plug

Yup I gone and done it, last one to come out nearest cam.

Didn't take much pressure and I'm now left with a forever turning ratchet and glow plug still in place, so would like to know anyone's input  on how to go about removing it
i.e. tools or garage job?

I think whatever way you tackle it you have a job on your hands.
So am I right in thinking the 10mm head is broken away from the plug?

Itââ,¬â,,¢s either a head off job and take to machine shop,there are specialist companies that can come out and remove glow plugs or you can try this if you feel confident enough?

If you are gonna try the above I would give a good soaking in wd40 for a few days and then attempt it with a warm engine.

Thanks for the tip but got name of a company who do it for Ã,£150 or no charge if they cant get it out.

Am I correct in thinking that if threads are in place and only top has come away its ok to drive to garage?

Yes it should be as still sealed,just make sure wire canââ,¬â,,¢t earth out

Personally I'd see how that car starts in cold weather and consider leaving it 'as is'. I'd expect it to be a little lumpy for a few seconds on start up but then run and idle perfectly fine after those few seconds.

What situation will you be in if the garage can't get it out? The same position as you are now or with a hole drilled in the glow plug which means you can't drive it and the head has to be removed from the engine for further work?

I bought a BMW that turned out to have a sheared glow plug in it. If it wasn't for the fact it had an error message when you did a diagnostic scan you'd have never known. OK I accept it was a six cylinder, not a four but it always started perfectly even when it was well below freezing.

I'm of the same opinion as @bouncypete, the PD engines are excellent starters and with even with zero plugs working they will start at very low temperatures. I personally don't think you would even notice a lumpiness, it'll just start and run.... unless you are planning a trip into extreme conditions!

I still think you should give it a damn good leaving alone but if you do go ahead I'd be very interested to know how you get on.
