My Mk1 VW Sharanââ,¬â,,¢s rear passenger door will not open using either internal or external handle. I have removed the interior trim panel and can see inside the door but am at a loss to know how to release the mechanism to open the door. Can anyone help?  I have attached a few photos of the lock.

Hi John and welcome to the forum! The door locks can and do fail but the wiring into the door is significantly more likely to be the culprit.

Remove the speaker if you havnt already done so and then pull and push the wiring loom where it exits into the rubber. Whilst doing that get someone to press the unlock button and see if you can't get it to unlock.

Failing that you can feed 12v direct to the lock to try and disengage it and unfortunately after that it's hammer time as the lock is secured from the end of the door which you can't access.

Your advice worked well.   :) After some giggling around of the wires behind the speaker, the lock moved so when I pulled the interior handle the door opened.  I am now afraid of closing it in case it refuses to open again.  Is the next step to try and replace the section of wiring loom that gets bent every time the door opens?  If so can you buy replacement sections of loom or should I try and test each wire in turn and just replace the faulty one?

There are two stages to locking, single and double lock. Double lock is what happens when you lock via the key or fob and locks the door from the outside and also disables the interior handle (to prevent crims shattering the glass and opening the car) When you lock from inside you only enable single locking so can still open it internally. I would probably now unplug the door lock, that'll stop it receiving the central locking signals but you will still be able to lock it from inside via the handle.

You can buy replacement looms or repair the wiring, there are guides to repair in the reference library (Click on Ford KB from the top menu)

I repair wiring loom on mine.
Need to remove rubber protective on top right side of door, and you will see what is defect in cabling.
