Automatic gearbox removal.

Hello all, I have two question's about my MK11 2.3 petrol 2001 galaxy. I may need to replace the automatic gearbox complete, I think, as it has lost all drive. My question is can I remove the gearbox alone leaving the engine in the car? That's really because I don't have lifting equipment. I have done this before on my old Fiesta, just using a trolley jack, axles stands, and some lenghs of wood. Before I replace the complete gearbox, is there any way I can check to see if it is worth replacing the solenoids, and would removing the oil pan tell me anything? Sorry that's more than two questions. Thanks in advance for any advice. Eddie

Would advise scanning the transmission for faults if not already done so.
If you do need to remove box it can be done without engine removal but engine will need support from either a hoist or jack, bearing in mind you will need to lower engine/gearbox slightly before separation.

Hello again and thanks a lot for the great advice. Excellent news I can remove the box on it's own.  I do have another couple of question's. Scanning, as the car does not move, would one of those basic cheap hand held scanners show the fault codes for the transmission, or would I be better off having a mobile expert around, to read the codes? I would if needs be replace the gearbox with a guaranteed used one, but should I also change the torque converter at the same time? Thanks again for any further advice. Eddie

I have only used Vagcom/VCDS lite which will read your transmission module although no use for your Ford engine.
Your secondhand box should have the torque converter with it, would be worried if told you need to supply your own converter.
Personally don't think I would bother with s/hand unless you know the history.
