The aux heater again

I have been reading several posts on here about the heater as I have encountered one today. My daughter was complaining about the smell on start up, so I pulled fuse 12 to see if this made any difference, but it did not. It is not the heater causing the smell.
So I put the fuse back in and checked faults using vag com. There were a couple of overheat faults.
I cleared the codes and started her up, but the heater will not come on. I plugged vag com back in and tried the metering test. The blower does not come on. The pump made a clicking noise when I selected it. I then completed the test and it stopped. Could removing the fuse have caused a fault?
I have run the car with vag com but no faults are coming up.

You need to determine if this is exhaust fumes, crankcase fumes, diesel fumes (from a diesel leak) and is it coming through the front heater vents.
Is there any smoke from exhaust check the rubber seal around tailgate as exhaust fumes can be drawn in through a faulty or ill fitting seal.

Removing fuse would not cause a fault code only if the heater was running at the time of removal.
You need to bridge the terminals on the air temp sensor on the wiper linkage to be sure the heater will initiate, if you have overheats registered check run on pump for operation.

I had the car for the weekend, so I tested the glow plugs and one was giving an odd reading on the meter, so I changed them all just to eliminate another possibility. Started it cold this morning and it still pumped out a lot of blue smoke. Took it for a blast up the motorway and it goes really well. No smoke in the cab and none from the exhaust at tickover when I got back. The new turbo has really made a difference. I wonder if when the turbo blew, that it could have caused the valve guides to start leaking or is this smoke unburnt diesel. It is difficult to detemine. Once it has run for a minute is is fine, its the cold start that is the problem. This is the first diesel I have worked on, so some of the science of problem solving is a bit awkward for me. I am tempted to get a professional to diagnose the problem and then decide if I could solve the fault. I could keep spending money on parts that are not required, but I have enjoyed getting it back on the road, I would just like to get it running better.
