Hi,

I'm about to replace the intermediate shaft and stub on my 2003 1.9TDI 115BHP manual 6-speed as there is much play in it
I've also red the article from Mirez in the reference library.

Does anyone know a good shaft for a fair price? I've seen the next on ebay:

But what could be the difference between these two? is there something special with the 130BHP? also I see a extra rubber part to protect the splines from dirt but I can't imagine that it will fit over that protective ring.

other links are also welcome  ;)

also, If I remove the stub, will there come oil out of the gearbox? and If I assemble the new stub, will I have to press it in first to compress the spring or can I do it by just tightening the allen bolt?

Many thanks in advance!

I own a MK1 1999 2.3 DOHC Ghia & 2003 1.9TDI Trend.

I've just changed the intermediary shaft and stub a couple of days back. My kit came from J&R and only cost Ã,£29.99 delivered. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-GALAXY-SEAT-ALHAMBRA-VW-SHARAN-1-8-1-9-2-0-2-8-DRIVE-SHAFT-INTERMEDIATE-/132219483494?hash=item1ec8e53566:g:yHIAAOSwi7RZOHpC

No oil came out when the stub was removed and all in all it was quite simple to do.

The only 'problems' I encountered were:

The stub is mounted using a spring as you mention, which needs to be depressed slightly in order for the bolt to get a purchase when doing it up. Once a thread is obtained, it does up nicely.

Also, when removing the old stub, the brass spacer fell out in various pieces and I didn't not how the items should be positioned - namely the spring, cap, spacer and circlip. It made sense in the end though!

be careful with that allen bolt. mine had tread damaged, i guess when refitting and it was not possible to get it out. i made a leverage plate to pres stub shaft back, out of bolt holes, that was used for axel bearing cone.
Buying this car after knowing all common problems feels bit sadistic, but then again, my main income is from growing potatoes in arctic.

Cheers for the info, Mike.

I have had 2 or 3 driveshafts from J&R in the past and thankfully no issues, so now ventured onto the intermediate shaft!

Galaxy should be on the road soon as just need a replacement coolant hose, so will fully test it for vibrations then.

Thanks for al the replies :)
I do want good quality parts but not with the dealer prices so I will look around. But now I know the oil won't come out and I have to press the stub in to compress the spring in order to tighten the bolt.

Was it easy to get the 6 axle bolts loose?
and is it possible doing it on the ground?

You can do it on the ground obviously with axle stands.  I have manually pushed it in with my left hand and tightened the bolt with my right hand you have to give it some beans though . If your struggling though just use a long lever bar against the edge to compress the spring and tighten it.

I presume you mean the splined bolts for the driveshaft? If so, I used an impact driver to remove mine - so much easier and won't spin the wheel while trying to undo them.

Re the oil, nothing came out from mine and was all rather clean in there. Not sure if there should have been some oil or grease in there though! Saying that, the splines are always meshed, so not as though there is any movement between them like normal cogs/gears which need lubrication.

Yeah it can done on the floor, I did it all manually with hand tools.

Keep the passenger front wheel on the floor and the get the 6 splined bolts loose on the drivers side flange

then undo the bolts on the driveshaft support to engine block

remove six splined bolts and lower down slowly as it's a heavy lump!

It's a bit of a pig to compress and screw in the stub bolt but do able, took me 3 attempts on the floor

Torque settings are on this site somewhere

Gear shifting feels more connected after and direct

@Tricky69 : Indeed, I mean the 6 splined bolts for the driveshaft.
I will look for a splined M12 tool that's long enough. I'm looking for doing this somewhere at the end of the year.
Thanks for the advice everyone and I will post the result here in the future :)

Hi, I replaced the intermediate drive shaft a couple of years ago when I had a MK2 Galaxy, I used Motomax and they are easy to deal with and are excellent quality.
