Shabby wheel

Hi, my 2003 Aztec has a soft feel steering wheel. After thirteen and a half years the steering wheel has gone a bit shabby round the outer rim. Doesn't make a difference to use.
However, I'm a large bloke, and the wheel makes a white mark on dark trousers .
Has anyone ever found a cure or way to clean this up please? (The wheel, not the trousers!)
