SMAx 2.0 TDCI windscreen washers not working

My screen washer on a 59 plate SMax 2.0 TDCI has stopped working. Had it into ford with an ECU problem, came back and washers had stopped working.
 
I think it might be a fuse - but unsure which fuse it specifically is. I have checked the washer motor which energises when connected to a battery......but its not getting a signal from the wiper stalk I don't think.

I have now located a fuse at F9 and F10 in the passenger footwell. I took both these 15AMP fuses out and did a continuity test on them they bleeped which says to me they are both fine. I then started the engine and pressed the windscreen washer button.......I could hear a clicking - sounded like a relay in the passenger footwell .....but the washers did not work (and I had topped up the water).
Does anyone know if there is a relay for the washers? If so where would I find this to check it out since the clicking did not seem right to me?


Hello....latest Update:-
Today I stripped out the inner wheel arch to gain access to the screenwash bottle...no such luck - the screenwash bottle can only be accessed by removal of the front bumper. However, whilst stripped down I disconnected the pump and checked it again......still whirrs when voltage applied, but I cant here this from inside the car....so I am now wondering if the stalk is at fault? Anyone know how to test the stalk?
I also disconnected the pipe from the bonnet washers. There was an electrical connection to the washers, anyone know what this does and how to test it?
With the screenwash water pipe disconnected, I tried to suck through liquid......but nothing came through, this would point to a blocked pipe to me. I have heard that there is a one way valve which can sometimes gum up near the screenwash bottle....anyone heard of this or how I can find it or clean it / test it.
Anyone got a quick link to removing the front bumper - looks a difficult job without snapping plastic clips !!!!!
Any advice appreciated.

New update, tried to take front bumper off to access screenwasher bottle..... however had another idea. Disconnected pump and energised it from a spare battery..... this sprayed water onto front and rear screens.... so pump and pipes not blocked.... therefore how can I check the stalk? I am now thinking the button is not working correctly.... how can I check the stalk?

Has the clicking stopped? If you hear a click when you operate the stalk then its most likely energising a relay which would indicate the stalk is fine.

The only real way to test the stalk is by continuity test with it removed from the car.

The wires on jets will be for heating when it is cold out.

As above does the clicking still sound when operating the washer stalk? If so it suggests the stalk is working and you need to trace relay and see if there is a feed out of it.

wonder if you can spray contact cleaner down the stalk?

Where are the relays located, underneath the passenger Colwell? Any idea which relay is for the widescreen washers?.... is there a colour for the relay?

Do you get alarm faults at all as they are known to suffer water ingress causing GEM to go haywire,try whipping F26 out see if that makes any difference

I _think_ you can access the washer bottle enough to do what you need to by removing the front underplate.  Might be different on the Smax.

The outlet is a push-in.  Pull it out and I bet there is a gelatinous mass blocking it.  That's happened twice to me now. 

Hello, so to be honest pump now checked, pipes checked, washers working from external power to pump.... so I reckon its either stalk, relay or gem module.
1. Stalk gets pressed and relay can be heard clicking.... so I'm assuming stalk is working
2. Relay clicking e.g...therefore assuming this is working
3. Gem module? Anyone know how to check this.... had an alarm fault once, but this was three months ago.... but headlights main beam are currently not working?... connected to the washers problem..... thoughts please..... :-[

Well you have proved pump,pipes and jets by applying a direct feed.
You have also proved the stalk works as relay can be heard to operate.

In my opinion you have a gem module fault,quite how you would prove that I don't know,suppose plugging in to ford diagnostics is a start.

My next port of call would be to check the alarm for signs of water ingress as this is known to be an issue that knackers the gem.

Well, half of it is - and it's the half that usually goes wrong.  But you need to check that the resistance on the high current side goes to zero when the relay is activated.  It's not unknown for contacts to fail.




So disconnect the high current side, connect a multimeter on ohms to the contacts and apply 12V to the low current side.  Polarity might be important - some relays have diodes.  If the ohms go to zero (or very, very close), the relay is OK.
