Aux Heater

I'm just looking through my manual and it says my Aux Heater has a timer control in the Sharan?
It says it's in the roof, but I ain't got that?
Does this just mean it's automatic and not able to be timed?
It also states it runs off a second battery (which is supposed to be under the drivers seat, but there's not that much room in there?

Any advice, as it feels like the Aux heater doesn't work too well, I'm guessing the water pump for it fails as some state or it's just a shit to work sometimes?
Vcds is showing no errors with it.

If vcds shows no errors could be the temp sender is knackered,if memory serves correctly it only operates below 10 degrees.
You could try bridging the sender see if that gets it to run,it is a small brass looking thing that's up by the wiper linkage on nearside.
Can you hear the electric run on pump working?

I don't think any of the UK market models would've had the programmable timer heater factory fitted as standard, though the controls for it can be retrofitted. It's certainly not a standard feature, though Mark and Chris have it fitted I think. If you've not got the manual controls then yes the heater is automatically controlled (if working correctly!) to operate when a) the ambient air temp is less than approx 10^oC and b) when the coolant temp is less than 90^oC (although it runs in a lower power mode once the coolant temp reaches 75^oC).

As yours is an '04 plate there's a chance you've got the troublesome D5Z-F model booster fitted, having said that it usually throws up a fault code or two when it's gone wrong, even if said codes are erroneous!

It's freezing outside but tools are coming out and I'm going to find if it's fully working or not!

Where is located outside sensor? I want to make switch, but I can't see it..

Usually it's clipped to the wiper linkage infront of the pollen filter and is just visible in the 4th image down here (brass coloured item sticking out from below the plastic conduit clipped to the wiper linkage just to the right of centre of the picture), on a left hand drive vehicle the layout may be a bit different though!

More a slow warm up!
It was pouring it down yesterday, so I got about 5 minutes into jacking the back end up and had to abandon!

Where is the pump located in the engine bay?
I know the heater itself is below the near side rear arch area, but unsure on the pump, I assume it's in the engine bay?

If it does not log fails on ECU and is working without magician smoke screen then you are lucky, because heater is OK If pump has worn brushes you should get a fault code as heater would overheat and shut down. Have you changed thermostat? If it stays open you will need a lot longer time to get to right temperature.

when you start the car fist thing and below the correct ambient feel the exhaust on the aux heater. Quick way to see if its working or not. Mine wasn't. Took the plunge and bought a new one from Germany... Now sorted.

Can I just add something to the referred topic?  It mentions setting the gap, wetting the brushes and freezing them to reassemble.  Has anyone used plumbers'/first aid freezer spray for this, rather than waiting while it solidifies in the freezer?

I don't see why freeze spray couldn't be used for this job,would certainly speed up the process.
After using the fiddly cotton method I will try the freeze spray method if I ever need to do them again.
