Meh I am of the other opinion, you need some flexibility to allow it wipe. Cutting off some rubber will reduce that and the rubber that's left behind will be old and beginning to perish anyway!

For something that gets changed so infrequently, I'd rather put new on.

I can't see it being anything more than a temp fix much like giving them a clean with some white vinegar.
As mark says they need to be flexible to work properly,when they start smearing it's because the rubber has started to degrade.

I'm lucky if mine last a year.  The best price I can manage for all three (which tend to last even less time) is more than the cost of that tool.  Premium blades are the same price, each.  I used to replace just the rubbers but they don't seem to be available these days.

I'll be getting one and trying it on all those blades sitting in the garage.  I _knew_ something would pop up one day.....

Interesting idea, I suppose if your wiper's aren't clearing very well because the actual edge of the blade is contaminated/ split on a microscopic level then it could be quite effective although as already noted it reduces the 'depth' of blade remaining so that there will be less flex, furthermore, if the whole rubber blade is degraded and has gone hard it will make no difference. Also. if the blade has started to split at the extreme ends as they do after a while then it's no good anyway.

I try to keep my blades as free from crud as possible and clean them with e.g autoglym fast glass from time to time to keep then as clean as I can. Of course, the actual state of the windscreen glass and how clear of contaminants it is itself has a large influence on how well the wipers will clear it!

They also get noisy with age especially the old  non aero type, usually change them annually regardless.

Arrived yesterday.  Two sets of blades, one to take approx. 1mm off, the other to take 2mm, so you get two goes at life extension.  Will be having a go on my rear wiper (snurk!) as that suffers most (double snurk!) from all the filth and grit that builds up there (you get the picture) and reporting back.

Used it - it works.  I can get Michelin wipers for Ã,£7-Ã,£11, depending on size.  So I've immediately covered the cost on my Mondeo and saved even more by doing my wife's Focus.  And you can do two cuts per blade.

Now to see how long they last.
