Water in Sharan drivers footwell.

Hi everyone,
I've been battling this problem for a while but can't find where its getting in. All the usual culprits seem fine so any help will be appreciated. What I do know is where it is appearing inside the footwell and it is along the seam on the floor as in the pic.

What I have found whilst trying to sort this out is to put nappies under the carpet as they soak up the water really well and stops the carpets stinking again after you've got them dried out the first time.

Does it come in just being parked in rain or after driving?

Have you had a hose pipe running over car for a long time while carpet etc is out to try and trace?

Could try a couple of them smoke bombs plumbers use,just put recirc on heater before switching off and try to block vents best as possible. Hopefully should see a trace of smoke exiting the vehicle

When you say the usual culprits, what have you checked? The door weatherstrip I assume? What about the scuttle- have you cleaned/ checked that? When the pollen filter gets changed is usually a good opportunity to do this- it's incredible how much crap (leaves and dirt mostly) gets in there and if it blocks the drains at either end (or even the drains where they emerge into the wheelarch behind the plastic wheelarch liner at the rearmost end of the arch) then water can build up in the scuttle until it finds a way in to the cabin. Also, do you have a sunroof?

Yep checked them all, door weather strip is fine, the scuttle is clear as are the drains on both sides and behind the wheel arch liners. The car doesn't have a sunroof so thats one less thing to worry about.

The water does come in when its standing but I've not had a drive where its rained but dry before / after. I poured water along the tray where the wiper arms come through and it still came in, tried it there to try and eliminate a possible windscreen seal leak.

With using the nappies under the carpet I've been able to narrow down where it appears in the footwell and initially it was on the seam and came up through those areas marked but now is higher up on the same seam on the bulk head. Its not coming in through the fuse box nor as far as I can tell through where the pedals go through.

How its getting into the chassis foot/rail is a bit of a mystery!

Hi, you don't mention which footwell ? If it's the passenger side it's probably the rear screen wash pipe tucked underneath the door trim cover has pulled apart,  common occurrence, simple to fix there's a 'how to' on site, I did mine and cured the same problem. Hope this helps.

Best bet in that case then is get sound proofing out and position yourself looking under dash while someone sprays car with a hose

Strip downthe drivers side, cover intalcum powder, hose down the outside of the car and follow the drip / water lines....

when i bought my gal i had water entering the passenger foot well , turned out to be the windscreen seal on the drivers side had come away or split, it run in through the seal and run across the top of the dash along the bulk head and then down into the passenger foot well. had to have a new screen put in on the insurance and when he took it out noticed that it was a replacement screen and it looked as if the installer had not cleaned all the old sealant off before fitting the new. just a thought?

Well I've finally had time to have a look and the water is trickling in from the top right hand corner of the footwell behind the fusebox area but there is no water on the fuse box nor any of the wires. I've taken the scuttle tray out yet again and there are no blockages in the drain holes and the same applies behind the wheelarch liner. Its got me stumped and just a tab bit frustrated. I've taken a couple more pics if they help.

Hard to make out from picture but is that on the panel that is below the small quarter light window??

If so I would get some gaffa tape around the glass and see if that stops water ingress and also down the side of windscreen if quarter light glass not the problem.

I have taken many of those quarter windows out and on most of them the bolts are barely done up.

Where the water is can only really come from a few places:

1) That quater window
2) The windscreen itself
3) Sunoof drain pipe (not applicable to you)
4) Large foam seal where the cabin filter would sit on a LHD vehicle
5) Wiring connector for the door on the A pillar
6) Perished rubber allowing water to run down the bonnet release cable.

1,2 and 5 are your most likely

was raining bit heavy 4 the last 2 days .. passenger side carpet done with water..never had this before.. tracked the water leaks.. top left front wind screen where the water leaks from...sorted now..thnx again.

Hi Alial, not sure from your last post where water getting in. Was it the bonding seal at the top left, ie. Passenger side of windscreen? Has this stopped the water to just the passenger footwell or both including drivers side or is drivers side still leaking? I'm very interested as mine is leaking in drivers footwell.

hi m8..you are correct ..bonding seal around left side front wind screen is past its good time...try to push (not too hard) the front screens edges using ur hand from inside ur car and see if its moving ..
