Hi, I have had previous problems with the central locking on my Mk2 and diagnosed the drivers door wiring loom as the culprit! I replaced this and that solved that. But I now have a new and wonderful problem, with all the doors and tail closed I but the key into the ignition, turn on and the tail gate lock opens! Can anyone advise if they have encountered this problem? and do you have any  suggestions as to what the problem might be. Only new to the site so hello to all!

Hello and welcome along ;)

Well the normal cause for something like this would be the wiring within the tailgate rubber breaking down but I'm struggling to think of a circuit in the tailgate harness that go's live on ignition and seems a big coincidence! Since there is no other control for the tailgate it has to be a short of some description, did it happen immediately after replacing the loom in the drivers door? And did you replace it or repair it?

Hi Mirez, thanks for the welcome. No the loom was a good 2nd hand one. I checked all the wiring and it was good to go. The tail gate has only started acting up in the last 2 weeks or so and the loom was installed over 4 months ago! It will close with   the car is running or not all be it with a couple of slams and will lock on the central locking fob once closed.

My MKII locks the tailgate when ypu start the engine (I think) and won't let you open it with the engine running until you have opened a door (or maybe just the drivers door).  Might even have to leave the door open.  Possibly the lock/unlock signal to the boot is shorted to the wiring (in the tailgate gaitor?).  It certainly feels like the unlock when you open the boot by lifting the handle is electrically controlled, so maybe the signal from any potential switch in the handle mechanism is shorted to the signal intended to lock it from the main wiring (Central controller?)
