Rear number plate light board

Hi everyone,

I strongly suspect I need to start off by saying that I think I have well and truly messed up here......

I bought a 57 plate Galaxy for my other half last month as our old Mk.1 wasn't going to easily pass the MOT next month.....! On the snag list was the number plate light board which has seen better days but not repaired. Now I suspect I know why....! Upon buying a new unit and removing the old unit this morning, I can't for the life of me fit the new one into place.

Does anyone know the "correct" process for fitting a replacement unit of these? Dare I ask if this is a case of having to fit it with the rear window removed? If this is the case, (and really stupid question time), who would the best person to do this? Certainly not me! But would a bodyshop do a good job, or should I approach someone like Autoglass?

Many thanks for any help they can offer. At this point I'm well and truly hacked off with myself for undertaking something I couldn't finish!

Which part are you trying to replace? The rear number plate lamp housing? I find it hard to believe you'd need to deglaze the tailgate in order to do it but I'm not speaking with experience of having done the job! Perhaps if you could post a picture of the issue you're having we may be able to advise better.
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

If it's the panel/trim that runs centre of tailgate that number plate sits in then I can't see you need to remove glass.
Passed a few Sharans today and it looks like secures way below the glass, can you offer new part up and see where fixings locate. I would think clips hold it in and at a push need to remove inner tailgate trim to access some screws
