I have what appears to be a common problem. 2.0 sharan  2001. the batt drained overnight on several occasions til a passer by pointed out the terminal box issue. I had already replaced the batt to no avail and have since bought a 2nd hand term box. It is now in my local garage and I'm not convinced they have nailed down the problem of hot wires. A new alternator is the diagnosis.
Thoughts please forum???? PLEASE!!!

get under it and check for the earth strap (gear box to chassis one) major probs with battery drain caused by that one degrading over time or coming loose. don't automatically go thinking its one of the major bits before checking the little ones first. my friends mk1 alhambra had a nightmare with battery drain and it turned out to be the strap.

If it's terminal box it will be obvious,to cause a non start issue like a flat battery it would have got fairly hot and show signs of heat damage to box and discolouration of the terminals.

Easy way to check earth bond is put a jump lead battery neg to engine block,if it starts check out earth if it does not then back to drawing board

Don't forget, if you are getting hot wires and the battery fuse box melting, the usual reason is high resistance in the cable from the alternator, not the alternator itself. This can be checked easily enough with a voltage drop test.
