sharan failure to drive

hey just looking for advice was in the car the other night coming home and it instantly stopped driving .. it goes into gear but makes a loud whizzing noise and doesn't smell so great ! I've replaced the cv joint as it was totally cracked but still won't drive at all ... anyone else had this problem gear box ? flywheel ? my husband will strip it apart to see but just wondering if anyone has experienced this also ... there was no prior warning at all ... noise only occurs when you lift the clutch at biting  point ..

I'm afraid that sounds very much like the the old issue of knackered intermediate / stub axle driveshaft splines...... That's not the only thing it could be but #1 on the list of probable suspects........

thankyou for your reply i will pass any advice onto the hubby  . i am so frustrated with it! family of 6 all together and one baby on the way and now only have a two seater van to get around joys ! looks like it's going to cost me a few pennies ..

am pretty sure this is what he also replaced yesterday looks like a bar with two bells on the end .. and it's still not working:( am not very good with cars as you can probably tell

What you are describing sounds like an outer driveshaft, the splines I suspect are the cause of the issue are on the inner (intermediate) driveshaft on the driver's side.

no drive and doesn't smell so good with a whirring noise; 

sounds like clutch plate has disintegrated ?  the friction material falls off so the noise you here is the flywheel whizzing over rivets that held it together , no friction so in cant drive the input shaft to move the car.

if its that then its a gearbox out job i'm afraid

I would check those splines first on the inner o/s drive shaft, the smell could be the heat generated from the splines slipping burning grease etc.
You would normally get a slow build up to clutch plate failure, slipping in higher gears and possible difficulty engaging gears.

thanks very much for all you input... going to check the splines this weekend I am really hoping it's that and not the flywheel / gearbox as I said before no prior warning/ noise was totally random .. need my car back on the road:( thanks guys

hey just wanted to give a wee update ..  was bang on finally got round to having a look it's definitely the inner drivers shaft .. away to get new parts thankyou so much! you also gained me some credidentials with the hubby now I won't get moaned at for wasting my time on the Internet lol ! guys
