Hi Just bought Mk2 2.3 Auto with gearbox problem.
Seems to be in limp mode, only using 2nd & 3rd gear. Was low on oil now topped up.
showing following fault code
00281 Vehicle speed sensor (G68)
            03-00 - No Signal
000297
I have checked the plugs on speed sensors, one on top of gearbox was unplugged, now connected but to improvement.
Does the (G68) indicate which of the sensors is at fault? Any other suggestion would be appreciated

there are three speed sensors on the vw box mines a 2004 though, what year is yours? I bought a pattern sensor from fords Ã,£25 I think, the official one was Ã,£80, I had a different fault code on mine, can't remember what one tbh, I was going to take a sensor off fit the new one, keeping the old one, if the code came back swap out the next sensor with the one I took off and so on, lucky for me it was the top one that was at fault so got it first time.

this is a pic of my gearbox two speed sensors on the top one on the front all the same part number

number 11 on the pic

Thanks Griff
Youre a star! I wasnt aware that there were two on top & been unable to find correct part at Ford dealers. Will now print out your diagram. Just got to hopre the sensor cures it now!
Thanks for your help

G68 is the sensor with longer wiring harness as it lives under the gearbox mount.

Thanks, will try changing that one 1st!

Have a check of wiring and plug condition first just to make sure no damage or corrosion.

Hi
Anyone got a wiring diagram?
Checking loom & found that the speed sensor on top of the gearbox has a re & a green wire connected, but the loom also has a black wire which is broken about 5cm from the sensor plug. maybe an earth wire??

Can you see both ends of wire I.e out of loom and out of the plug? If it's only loom and nothing on plug sounds like could be a gearbox earth? Have you had a look around to see if there is a lug still connected to a bolt or stud?

have had a good check around, there are only 2 wires on the plug & no sign of any broken earth terminal. I have now cut back insulation on the other speed sensor plug and found a similar black wire within the insulation, so think it must just be an unused wire.
As I cant get a sensor to try for a few days, I swapped the top & front sensors & fault code has changed from g68 to g38, so hopefully this proves its the sensor at fault, will find out on wednesday.
Now just got to sort electric windows which were fine but now playing up!!

That does prove sensor is at fault then if code has swapped also.

Have you checked wiring in rubber gaitors going in to doors and tailgate? Very common failure mode where wires break causing all sorts of electrical issues.

Not yet, will have a look today, was only o/s rear not working until I disturbed the drivers switches now the windows work from individual door switches but not from the drivers switches.

Sounds very likely the door wiring is broken to me,there is a guide in reference library about repairing them. I did mine and soldered in some extension wiring to hopefully make them last longer,it can be done in situ but I found easier to whip it out of door and repair on workbench.
