hi i hve searched the forums but nothing seems to answer my problem.i bought this galaxy after it had been stood for a few years so the remote batteries were dead. i replaced the batteries but it still didn't unlock or lock, i have tried to program my remote it goes into learning mode on the car by indication on door light, the remte led flashes when i press 1 button but when i try the hold 2 buttons down as describe in programing sequence the light goes out. even after several attemptes i can't get the remote to lock or unlock the car but it all works by key. anyone got any ideas on if it is a simple fix or if it is a new remote module i need

Sounds like you are releasing button 1 and then pressing 2? You need to press and hold button one:

Press and hold the LOCK button on the remote then while keeping the lock button pressed, press the UNLOCK button three times in quick succession on the remote before finally releasing both buttons simultaneously.

here is what i do.
unlock the door 3 times in quick succession to make the led on the door card stay on constantly.
then remove key aim at rear view mirror press and hold lock button (key led lights)
press the unlock button 3 times quickly (key led turns off each time 2nd key is pressed)
release both buttons try to lock the car nothing press the unlock button nothing.

Once you've done the programming (when you release the buttons) what's the car's LED doing and are you waiting for it to go out before pressing anything?

no it is still lit for about 30 secs. should i be waiting then?

AFAIK yes, you need it to exit programming mode. Takes about 20 seconds to exit after the last command is seen...

What's the car's LED doing and what's the key's LED doing after you release the remote's buttons?

the door led stay constant through out and stays on for about 30secs after i release all buttons.
the remoteled is lit whilst i'm holding the lock button but as soon as i press the unlock button as well it turns off, but lights up aggain in between unlock presses. as soon as ilet go of all remote buttons the remote light goes out.

actually today the remote fob flashed twice after the buttons were released but it still didn't program

The fob is sending the signal then but the car isn't seeing it - what details do you have on the fob? Make/Frequency? On an X reg it should be RF - is your key an RF key or the earlier IR key? (Look by where the shaft exits the key, there will be an "eye" for the IR version or it'll be blank if its RF...

on the casing it says 290 no other markings on the circuit board it says siemens.
on the key horshoe it says siemens 433.32 mhz 5wk4 790/97/98.
on the blade it says w3 haa.
the transponder chip is a rectangle with 1 corner missing  it looks like it says 1vw i can't see the rest of the number but it starts so the transponder isn't the problem. matter of intrest which tranponder type is this?

sorry could be 433.92mhz bad eyes

The transponder is a Ford PATS one, uniquely adapted for the Galaxy.

If its definitely 433.92 then that's the correct frequency for your car. I would probably conclude that the fob is faulty at this point which is the easiest thing to replace :)

Nope, that key won't work. You need to match the manufacturer and frequency VERY carefully else it won't work - You basically have two options, the key style you have or a late Sharan/Alhambra two button flip key (the latter requiring some significant modification to work)

As for the PAT's chip, since the car starts you don't need to replace that at all. Just swap the shaft sections between the fobs and the chip will go with it.

damn like those flip keys and boot release on fob

lol - yup, no good though. Even the Sharan flip version that will work only has two buttons on it and no boot release :(

Just a thought but you can buy a remote locking kit with a flip key and I think boot release.
Do you think this might work?

I've never fitted the boot release version but the standard works fine and I found it easiest to connect in via the tailgate switch cables under the rear trim panels below the quarterlight.
If the boot release lines could be brought out (if they aren't already) maybe this might work...

May not be as secure as the Ford system, but you get a kit with two keyfobs for around the price of a secondhand ford remote...

that sounds the kiddie now just to find and fit it lol

Sorry not here as often as I'd like.  Bought mine several years ago, but if you search for "Remote-Keyless-Entry-for-car-central-lock-KE669W-ULT" on ebay looks the same (possibly a few more config options) and it's the same supplier rightclick2003- who for me were quick to both deliver and respond to a query.  IIRC it came with wiring information which I choose to ignore, as the tailgate wiring was more accessible.
