Brand new to the s max.

hi folks.
Ive just got a 59 plate s max tit.
really please so far.
Its next to my old mondeo estate, and makes it look tiny,  ..
But needs must and im really chuffed to be fair.
drives great, really picks its feet up, 3rd gear is ace..lol

i have one really daft question, if anyone can help me..
Its about the DAB stereo.
Ive connected my phone a samsung S5 neo, and its fine and dandy making calls.
My question is, can i play my songs that are stored on my phone, through the stereo..
i have a pioneer unit in my mondeo, thats got a usb port which is great as i can just buzz through 16 gig of tunes.
and i know i can connect via the jack in the glove box.
but just wondered if i can play via blue tooth ..

If it's like the Sony dab fitted to mondeo they usually have a usb slot in glovebox,maybe smax has this also being the tit model? If it has music playback is simple. Not sure if it has Bluetooth audio playback though?

There's a module tucked up above the glove box that determines what you can do.  The later (from about 2010) ones allow Bluetooth streaming, showing the track playing on Converse, and are often available on eBay or other auction sites.  You can easily swap your present display for the Converse one.  The only issue would be adjusting the mileage.

There are compatibility issues with the firmware in:
the module;
the player;
the BCM (I think);
Converse.

My understanding is that early versions of the latter three will also not be able to provide Bluetooth streaming.  There is a cure for the last.  A search for Motral should bring up a Russian guy who has reverse engineered the code for the Converse and offers quite substantial upgrades for all display functions.  The only cure for the other two is replacement, sometimes including a small wiring alteration.  Maybe the BCM firmware can be reflashed by Ford.  Your '59 Sony (if original) is borderline for being capable/compatible.

In any case, it _is_ possible.  You, ideally, need to match up firmware versions from all components to make everything (BT, voice, USB, etc.) work.  It _can_ be a piece of cake and cheap.  Others have had extended compatibility and expense issues.

Mikes though has pretty much baffled me though, and i can build a pc standing on my head, but that has gone right over it.

I get what your saying to a certain extent, but i would not like to bugger anything up or brick the convo system.
ive had a look in the glovebox and there is no usb port, which is gutting really. but not the end of the world, i can use my phone via the jack, or start knocking up a few cd's with mp3's on.

or maybe change the head unit..but the sony dab is decent and obviously works through the convo and steering wheel, so i know so after market jobs can do the same but not sure if its worth the effort at this stage..

But again i really appreciate the feedback guys.

I've got a 63 plate smax, not sure on differences in spec though.
Mine has the USB port in the central box. There's also a 3.5 Jack in the box.
It also streams music via Bluetooth on the Sony dab radio.
I occasionally use it when waiting to link up the phone when watching sky go so the sound comes through the stereo.
Connect it via Bluetooth as if you are connecting to use the phone, switch the radio to bt input and hit play on whichever media player you have on your phone.

Sorry, I was trying to be as clear as I could on a subject that _I_ find really confusing.  I think I got it right.  You would be unlikely to brick anything - my understanding is that firmware flashes will simply not work if you don't have the right module to flash to.  Again, my understanding is that: no USB in glove box = definitely no Bluetooth streaming.  Paradoxically, you can have USB in the glove box and _still_ no Bluetooth streaming.  Even more paradoxically, later versions of the phone/USB/Bluetooth module above the glovebox have a USB socket - but this is for updating only.

The other option would be to go to one of the WinCE/android onboard computers that fit in the Sony hole.  They do everything you want inside themselves.  The WinCE ones appear to be generally hopeless - slow to start, buggy and everything else you would expect from a MS OS.  The others are getting there but quality control seems to be lacking.  Then there's the price to take into consideration....

Yeah, i hear what your saying mike..
i did figure it out, and did a search for the russian lad who has been modding the convo system, (clever bugger to be fair).
But i think the latter is my only option.
The sony head unit is great, talksport and kerrang or whatever i can find sounds great on dab.
so any upgrade will have to be dab, and compatible with the wheel controls and so on.
I have a pioneer in my mondeo, which is a 53 plate (ahh the old girl)..lol
The original went titsup and i got a double din replacment, that is really good for a cheapish unit, changes into loads of flashy colours and has a usb port so i kinda got used to that.
But i have my old car to flog, and a set of 17 inch allys and the head unit is worth atleast 50 quid of anyone's hard earned.
so i may just put that towards a decent replacment for the sony, and im guessing thats worth a few quid too..

ive had this, what 12 days now and i love it, so im going to keep it awhile for sure, i tend to hang on to cars i like so i may as well look after her.
Its got the st type wheels, and i was so chuffed with everything, i didn't realize they are 18" not 17", i thought they looked bigger..lol

I believe you can buy a surround that allows installation of a standard double DIN unit in the Ford curvy rectangle.  Installing your existing unit with one of those might be your cheapest option.

If you sell the Sony let me know, please.
