I towed my caravan yesterday with my mk 1 tdi.
Something's wrong!
It couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, I've been In second gear on the gentlest of hills and on two occasions in first on a dual carriageway with hazards flashing being overtaken by caravans being towed by cars with tiny engines.
Seems funny now but bloody frightening at the time
My cars done well over 200 k and is quite tired and noisy, been told noise is cos pump timings a bit out.
I've towed this can with three gals now a 2litre, a 2.3 and now this one. Never a problem till now.
The car drives ok when not towing.
No smoke at all, just a massive lack of power.
I thought maybe it's the brakes binding on the caravan or a wheel bearing on it binding but could feel no heat at the hubs.
I'm stripping the hubs today to check all is well but I think it's down to the car.
Looks like she may be left behind if I find another car this week as I don't fancy a couple of hundred miles of west country hills.
Any suggestions?

Maybe cars going into limp mode with the extra torque needed to pull the van, you need to scan for fault codes and also check timing aswell.

Wouldn't the glow plug light come on in limp mode?
Revs normally but no power
I would have thought if the timing was a real issue I would have seen some smoke as I was desperately caning it on a massive hill in first gear for a good few minutes.
Plan is to drive it anyway and if/when it breaks down call the rac
This old car has had more out of my wallet than my last two galaxies
Water pump, cam belt, alternator pulley, master cylinder, brake pipe and loads of bits salvaged from my last one.
It's getting not a penny more, if it gets me home I will take great delight in watching the scrap yard crane destroy it.
Shame really as its got almost 13 months mot

Glow plug light does not normally come on or flash when in limp mode but the condition is usually temporarily resolved by switching off and restarting the engine and then runs OK until the next instance of under or overboost.
But as already said you really need to have a scan as you may have some faults stored.
