Mk2 2.3 petrol Aircon compressor

Hi guys looking for some advice on a replacement Aircon compressor. Had the clutch fall to bits on it so decided to remove it and the dreaded grinding noise only to find that the bearings have disintegrated their casing. Having a quick look on ebay I see they are around Ã,£200 upwards for a new one. Is there any other ac units of other vehicles that will fit ? Seems as its for a 7 seater as with most parts the price is bumped up.
Part number on compressor is 96NW-19D629-AB
Any advice as to where to source one would be greatly appreciated as I don't know how much longer it will hold together

From what I've read (on tinternet) you can bypass the ac compressor with a smaller belt is this true ? If so what belt do I need to acquire?
We can do without the Aircon until our budget permits but the Mrs needs the car for work so I need to rectify the problem Asap

is it just the clutch bearing that's bad? I know that you can find them on the internet.
information on the bearing says: NSK 30BD40DF2

But it looks hard to replace because 6 places of the pulley are pinched to hold the bearing in place so you would have to grind it out in order to remove the old bearing.

I'm pretty sure that you can use a shorter belt. But I think that you have to remove the AC pulley because it would be in the way otherwise. I know from my experience that I was able to slide it off by hand so you can give it a try. (first remove the circlips of course)

The bearings have scored the inside of the pully so if I was to get a replacement bearing I doubt it would fit :0(
I can see I would need to remove compressor as the shorter belt would cross the path of the compressor. I'm going to have it off tomorrow to inspect it further but I'm thinking a short belt is the best option till I can source another compressor. Just want to be sure I order the right size belt

Use a piece of string around the pulley run to get an approx belt length,you can then try and match it up with one. Motor factors best bet as they have the books giving sizes etc.

As Orbis said you can bypass the A/C compressor using a shorter belt.

I have fallen victim to this after sending my car in for a A/Cregas, only to be told that there's no compressor.
The only issue is that you will get warning errors on the HVAC (flashing screen on startup) and the A/C will not work.
I've also notice the belt sometimes slips if your two hasty when starting the car up.

I've seen a few second hand compressors on  for around Ã,£60, might get you by.

Does anyone know if there are any visible part numbers on aux. belts? If so, i could check tonight for the part number installed on my belt, although the garage suggested it was from a transit

If not johnnyroper idea is probably the best way to match a new belt.

Belts usually have numbers on them but if it's been on a while they may have faded so they cannot be read

This would appear to be the cheapest new compressor unit to fit the 2.3 petrol available on , though if you're prepared to take a chance on a secondhand unit you could get one for less......

If the recon is an original fitment and has been reconned properly, I would go for that rather than an off-brand model of unknown provenance.
