Mk2 Galaxy O/S driveshaft inner stub shaft

I have a new complete offside drive shaft assembly ready to install which comes complete with the gearbox stub shaft.  The kit has a spring, brass ring, steel disc and circlip, so before I start removing the old parts I would like to see how these must be installed.  I cannot find any sketch showing the sequence that these go together.  The manual mentions to ensure the circlip is engaged but there is no circlip groove on the stubshaft that I have ? Can someone explain the setup please or show a sketch - thanks

Not too sure what happened to my reply. Think i messed it up.

Just looking though the hanyes manual now (section 8) however i cant find any mentions of the stub shaft.

but using the image (12) supplied in the manual ive found the following.

Are these of any help?

I have those manaul pages thanks but there is not any clear detail of these stub shaft parts.

Yes I have seen this sketch and it does show some detail that looks like the order is spring is installed first then plate, brass ring and circlip. It doesn't show which way round the brass ring goes, domed side inward maybe ? and what holds the circlip in position ? there is no groove ?

The fifth image from the bottom gives guidance as to the orientation of the brass ring?

I am hoping that orientation is correct, it is the way I assumed it should go.  In that same fifth image you can also see the circlip sitting on the shaft but it has no groove to locate it ?

The pic in haynes with the circlip is for a five speed box, the six speed and auto has flange joints

I think you are talking about the other end of the shaft on the 5 speed box shafts that has a circlip.  This question is concerning the gearbox stubshaft on the six speed box which I think ? does have a circlip in front of the spring assembly.

If neither the original or replacement stub shaft has a groove to locate that circlip then I can only assume it works purely by it's spring resistance against the shaft. The brass ring as you say should have it's taper pointing towards the differential, I believe it will butt up against the diff housing once the stub shaft is bolted into the diff.

I believe it requires some load to install the stub shaft against the spring resistance and then tighten the retaining bolt, so the stackup of parts on the shaft will move outboard and then the circlip would not be in contact with the brass ring. This looks like a strange configuratio to me.

Quite possibly that circlip serves only to keep those components in situ on the shaft until it is assembled and bolted up, after that it serves no purpose.

Ah, my manual only shows the instructions for the 5 speed or automatic.
