Engine blocked

I'm new here, did a search but came up blank, but excuse me if this question is answered somewhere else already ...

Just got the Galaxy going again after it was sitting unused for a long time. It fired up first time, which was great, then we changed the oil and filter and fired it up again, all seemed OK. Took it out for a test drive (couple of miles) but when we got back the engine suddenly cut out and wouldn't start again. Popped the bonnet and it was hot under there, and then we spotted that the rubber hose running between the radiator main hose and the top-up bottle had split, so we'd lost a lot of coolant. I'm worried that we've over-heated the engine and it's blocked, but suspect that there may be some kind of overheat detection system that cuts out if it senses that things are getting too hot. If so, how do we re-set it? Can anyone shed any light? Thanks!

There's not an overheat cut out you just get warning in the dash.
Best bet is scan for fault codes first and go from there.

As above there is nothing to stop it starting or running when overheating which is why you have the coolant gauge on the dash.

You say it won't start which makes it sound like it turns over but won't run in which case the engine isn't seized and you'll have to start looking at the basic's like air and fuel.

Thanks for the replies. I should have made it clearer - when I turn the key the fuel gauge and temperature gauge come to life but nothing else happens. I suppose it could be an electrical fault, just coincident with the loss of coolant.

When johnnyroper says "scan for fault codes", could you explain? I live in a village out in the sticks, no-one here has the facilities to do computer diagnostics (the nearest mechanic I know of with a diagnostic computer is 25 miles away). Is there a smartphone app or something, these days?

If you have a laptop get yourself a VCDS lead from Ebay (less than a tenner) you can then do your own diagnostics see below for more info

Thanks to those who replied. My friend and I (well, my friend) got it going with a bit of advice from a local mechanic. Now I need to find out how the rear passenger-door electric window mechanisms work, as both of them have packed in. I've taken one of the door panels off but heaven knows how they installed the mechanism in the first place, access seems almost impossible. Off to do a search now!

Before you start taking window regulators out (which is not too bad to do)
Have a check of wiring in rubber boots from b post to doors,I am willing to bet there is broken wires in there,worth checking all 4 doors and tailgate for same problem as they all suffer with it.
