Hi Martin
I do find if ours is facing downhill when down to the Ã,¼ tank will suddenly go down to the empty and the fuel light and audible warning will sound, comes back up when on the level or face uphill.

I've always found my fuel gauge drops more rapidly when it gets below 1/2 tank and closer to empty. As Chris says parking on a hill will affect the gauge as the fuel will all 'migrate' to one end of the tank and alter the level of the float in the tank for the fuel level sensor/ resistor.
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

I've noticed with mine once below half it drops a lot quicker than above half. Sound like it's just a characteristic of these motors

think i have had that on every car i have owned went to whitby the weekend and when we got there it looked like we had barely used any fuel came home and whoosh the lots gone

Whitby !!!   should have come to Sunny Bridlington and you could have parked up next to ours and had an extra sausage at breakfast  ;)
